Review: Good, tasty recipes, none of the foods I must avoid! Makes eating well much easier - Enjoying a green drink from the book! Finally, a paleo related cookbook that has no ingredients I have to avoid! Eggs, eggs, eggs, in all the paleo recipe books and lists I find. Cutting out wheat, dairy and eggs healed my sinus problems. Not one headache since 1976. I was so lucky to find a doctor (California, no big surprise) back then who knew that what I eat or don't eat could heal me. Forward a few years, I could eat a modified amount of the above foods, and avoid headaches. When debilitating vertigo hit, it took me several years and almost becoming disabled, to discover that purely following the food avoidance diet again would also heal my inner ears. Lessons learned. My aha moment was recalling a pediatric ENT doc's mention that kids "grow" into sinus infections instead of ear infections--they are related. Eureka! Try the same diet for the inner ear problem that solved the sinus headaches. By then we lived in Ohio. I chuckled recently that the same Cleveland Clinic where in the 1990's the ENT brushed off my success story of healing vertigo through diet--"I've never seen a peer reviewed article about that"-- now has a functional medicine center in connection with Mark Hyman, MD. Dr. Wahls is really breaking ground in the medical community, and wisely sharing what works before all the science is documented in the way that validates it beyond the individual patients' actual results. Now with this cookbook, I can fix food that isn't boring, & don't have to spend time and money to find egg replacements. I tried Xanthan gum recently and had another attack. Apparently, it's often made from dairy or soy, another added food to avoid. If there is another paleo cookbook out there that has no wheat, dairy or eggs, I'd like to know, by the way. Adding comment after cooking based on the book. I am not using the exact recipes today, but the inspiration is remarkable! Eating mushrooms sautéed in avocado oil, mashed cauliflower, waiting for some natural pork and cabbage to come out of the oven. Watching several of Terry Wahls talks helps reinforce the reasons to make the total switch to this kind of eating. I am so grateful! Review: Beautiful book, easy and delicious recipes, succint layout of the Wahls Protocol - This cookbook is an outstanding resource for following any stage of the Wahls Protocol, and I can't recommend it highly enough! When I read Dr. Wahls first book, The Wahls Protocol, some years ago I was daunted by the cornerstone requirements of eating 9 cups of vegetables and fruits in a specific variety, and eliminating dairy, gluten, and eggs, so I did not attempt it. Then more recently, re-reading to see if I might after all use the protocol to deal with severe and chronic pain, I again thought it would be too complex, time-consuming, and expensive. Having this cookbook resource, I now find that none of these concerns are the case! Dr. Wahls is very sensitive to how much energy, time, and money people with MS and other disabilities have, and the day-to-day plan is easy to follow. It does involve possibly more grocery shopping that one is used to (likely shopping for very different things) and a few items, like coconut oil, are on the pricey side. But the trade-off on not buying ultra-processed packaged foods, dairy, and gluten products will help to balance that out. The presentation of each of the 3 stages of the Wahls Protocol (the basic Wahls diet, Wahls Paleo, and Wahls PaleoPlus, which is essentially a keto diet) is succinct and easy to follow. You're also encouraged to ramp up slowly, no need to face eating all 9 cups of vegetables and fruits right off the bat (although she strongly recommends going cold turkey on dairy and gluten, which I did find to be a good strategy). Then, each section of suggested meals--smoothies, soups, skillet dinners, salads, etc.--begins with a "template" to follow using your own on-hand ingredients, followed by numerous recipes that she and her family enjoy. I have not seen one that I don't want to try out at some point. Beyond that, one of the most beautiful cookbooks I have ever seen! Photography is fantastic, and layout is very easy to read. I purchased the paperback, but think I will use this often enough that I want to spring for the spiral-bound edition as well.

Just What I Needed
This is my new favorite cookbook. Being allergic to everything and having autoimmune disease, I have been eating the same limited menu for several years. Except for the tree nuts, every recipe works for me. I read through the entire book in one sitting and got busy cooking. There are some errors in the recipes, but it’s not hard to identify the issues and adjust, for a seasoned cook. It’s still the one reason this review is not five stars. Many recipes can be modified somewhat to use food already on hand. My family hardily approves of the new direction. They love the skillet sauté recipes and desserts. We haven’t indulged in dessert for quite awhile—what a treat. Would like to see a test kitchen edition and a Wahl’s Restaurant chain.

Feed your mitochondria!
I have lupus, along with several other chronic illnesses. I first started with Dr. Wahls' book, The Wahls Protocol, and have been slowly changing my eating habits. When I first started following the first level, I got kind of bored of what I was eating and wanted to have more variety while still following the protocol. I love this cookbook! The pictures are lovely, it's packed with nutritional science facts, and I love how all the recipes show adjustments for each level together. There is enough overview of the Wahls Protocol at the beginning of the cookbook to introduce the idea of eating for your cells and your mitochondria as well as avoiding allergens and food intolerances. And scattered through the book are other's testimonials of how the Wahls Protocol has helped them. I also love that Dr. Wahls' included a note about a new eating disorder called orthorexia, which is the obsession of eating "healthily". When I had first learned about how processed food was so bad for those with chronic illness, I began to have a weird relationship with food, avoiding eating unless I had a healthy option. I felt like I had an eating disorder, but my criteria didn't match the typical since I did eat a decent amount when I did eat, so I didn't feel like it was a thing. Seeing that note included in the review and her emphasis that meals aren't supposed to be stressful was a very thoughtful and important insight for those of us who can be a bit obsessive and aim for perfection. A cheat won't kill you! But you will be uncomfortable! Haha. While I didn't completely stick to eliminating sugar, gluten, or dairy. The increase in my veggie intake and the decrease of my carb and sugar intake really helped my energy levels. I usually go through energy and crash cycles throughout the day and those mostly subsided. I was pretty good about sticking to it for 3-4 months. Then I started falling off the diet when my cousin came into town a few months ago and convenience became more appealing. Good habits are so hard to build but so easy to break! I've learned how important my diet is in how active my disease is and I'm glad I have this cookbook to help get me back on track. I recommend this and Dr. Wahls' other book to all of my friends with chronic illness. Feed your mitochondria!

The Only Cookbook You Need, Autoimmune Disease or No!
I am overjoyed to have this book in my kitchen at last! The Wahl's Protocol helped save my live, and I sing it's praises to everyone who will listen. Following the protocol is much easier with this cookbook. You can learn how to make pates, fermented foods, grain-free porridge, all kinds smoothies, salads, and skillet meals (which are so easy to make and really minimize kitchen clean up). If you have an autoimmune disease, you need this book. If you just want to know how to incorporate more vegetables into your diet, you need this book. This is actually the best cookbook I've ever read since Joy of Cooking (and I've read a LOT of cookbooks). The binding of The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life is very strong. It will hold up to a lot of use in the kitchen, but the formatting is so pretty and the pictures so GORGEOUS that I've been copying the recipes down by hand on paper to avoid splattering it with any food. It's a work of art, and every time I read it, I feel so inspired (and hungry)! Thank you, Dr. Wahls!

Awesome book for everyone!
So very helpful. I have multiple sclerosis and had been waiting for this book to come out for months. Read it the minute I got it. The healing, nutrient-dense recipes are not only great for me (literally a life-saver) but for anyone who wants to lead a healthy life. What common sense to eat fresh vegetables and meats, made at home from scratch! This book makes it easy. And fun. The artful photos of each and every dish are lovely!. Each dish looks tasty and appealing! And-thank God-these recipes are fast and easy to prepare! No more spending hours in the kitchen to eat healthy. Finally, while this book is very accessible, it is chock full of great information and resources I can use. Thank you, Terry Wahls!!!

Okay But You Don't Need It
I was really surprised how little substance this book actually had. I expect a cookbook to have ideas I wouldn't easily be able to figure out on my own and this one missed the mark. The first part was a repeat of the what to eat and eliminate on the diet, so if you don't care about reading her own medical history or all the nitty gritty details about how and why she thinks this diet works, just get this book. Keep in mind many of these recipes aren't really things you need recipes for. Lot of smoothies and juices, very basic salads, and skillet meals that were basically just cooking a meal and throwing greens and a few other veggies in the pan. Oh and if you already know how to cook a sweet potato to soften it, I'm pretty sure you can figure out how to mash it without a cookbook too. Dr. Wahls is a former vegetarian and that was reflected in many of the recipes. The ones not mentioned above generally were things that most people who were previously on a standard American diet might not find appetizing. I did enjoy the smoothie recipes so that's why I'm giving it the rating I am. Otherwise, it's not a cookbook I refer to at all. If you know the foods allowed on the AIP diet and you have some basic cooking skills, you really don't need this book because most of it you can figure out on your own.

Just what I needed!
I have been dealing with extremely debilitating health issues for years, and so have my husband and children. I tried introducing several different diet plans here, with varying success. Dr. Wahls has created a plan that seems tailor made for our needs--no grains, eggs, or dairy, and very little sweetener or tomatoes. The emphasis of the diet is on veggies, which is great! She does not exclude nuts, beans, or meats, which is also a plus for us. So we can have variety in our diet, without compromising our road to recovery. The cookbook was written with everyday people in mind, not like other cookbooks that seem to focus on people who shop exclusively at Whole Foods, and who also have tons of time and energy to plan and prepare meals. I love that! She goes over the basics, then explains how to be more efficient and thrifty in the kitchen, which is great for a family living on a tight budget! Most of all, these recipes are ones I think my family will actually enjoy. I can even find recipes that please two of my kids who have "food issues", which is awesome! This going to be a cookbook I use all the time!

A must
As Psoriatic arthritis sufferer and after ten years of trying to help myself this book and the dr’sother book has put it all together and given me a road map .after 40 years avoiding any kind of fats ( probably why I have the disease) I am embracing good fats .it’s a bit scary but at this point I will try most things to keep my mobility. sugar was my main addiction but there are recipes in her book that can give you a nice treat .I have made the chia and coconut dessert which is amazing.as a vegetarian I can’t do all the recipes but I really appreciate the knowledge she has passed on regards to the properties in the foods we need to consume more of .she is an inspiration .
