It worked find on the first day (for 15 minute stretches.) But now, it shuts off after 2 minutes. Every time. Should I return it?

I use mine plugged in. It’s on all the time, 24/7, since I got it. I’ve had no problems doing this. If you are using batteries it could be that your batteries are weak and that’s why it shuts off so quickly.

How do you access handheld mode?

There is a button on the back of the laser to turn it on, and the laser will automatically go on. However there isn’t a mode you can switch to so you can hold it.

Is this cat toy motion activated?

It is not motion activated. It has a built in timer that starts it throughout the day.
