The Art Deco Poster Review: Allow me to pile on. - This book presents one of those rare occasions when five stars just doesn't seem to be enough. I buy a lot of illustrated books (more than I should, by all accounts) and this gem sets the standard for what every art book should offer. The selection of posters exceeded my expectations and were all given ample space on their respective pages. The binding, paper, dust-jacket and, most importantly, image resolution were all of the highest quality. Even the boards were given their due - both front and back are very attractively stamped with a vibrant, metallic-blue, geometric design, befitting the theme of the books contents. I normally refrain from contributing a review to any book Robin Benson has already weighed in on. Once he has had his say there is really little left worth adding. So, at best, I will just be piggy-backing on his thorough and incisive commentary. But in this particular case I had to join the chorus in singing the praises of this beautiful volume. Generally, in collections of this sort, one is lucky if 50% of the pictures are to your liking. Here the percentage pushes, unbelievably, close to 100. Quite an admission given that, as much as I enjoy Art Deco, it is still not the style or period I am the most fond of. If anyone in the publishing trade reads this, do yourself a favor and buy a copy of this book. Study it, and refer to it often. This is what exemplary books look like. Thank you Vendome for proving it is possible to earn more than five stars. Review: A Big, Beautiful Treat for Deco Enthusiasts - For lovers of the art deco poster, this big, beautiful book is a five star showpiece. The selection of posters is wide and well chosen, including some iconic classics, but many I had not seen before. As is to be expected, there are more examples from France than from anywhere else, but the geographic range is wide -- an assortment of Italian posters was particularly intriguing. The commentary is instructive, and clearly very carefully researched. Most important of all, the reproductions are beautiful. This would be a great present for any fancier of posters, art deco, or the two in combination. Indeed, it would be a great present for anyone interested in design, modern art, or just plain great looking pictures.

lovely
I have been taking art lessons through the mail and since then I've acquired a better eye for symmetry and design. This is a lovely book, beautifully arranged, of a favorite time period of mine, the Art Deco period. This is a collection that showcases the iconic look of posters in this period, beautifully reproduced and each accompanied by explanatory text that analyzes the design of the art and explains the references of each poster. This is a book one can linger over for hours. Very well done.

Mais nouveau book
This Is a beautiful book. I did not realize until I saw it how much orange the poster artist used in that area, but the collection is broad and the art is outstanding.

A GREAT SURVEY OF ART DECO POSTERS
The book represents a wide array of art deco posters and commentary on the significance and relevance of poster art of the inter-war era. Glad I invested in such a comprehensive look at the great poster art of the 'greatest era of art, architecture, and design of the 20th Century'!

Wonderful Collection of Posters
I love this book. It is a seemingly endless collection of beautiful posters. This is not the schlock from the art deco era. Even I can see these are great art. This is a thick book, too. I have spent hours going through it.

Waaaay exceeded my expectations!
This book was bigger, more colorful, more informative, more entertaining than I dared to hope it would be for the price. The book is a work of art in itself. Thrilled with it! Best purchase I have made in a long time.

This surely has to be the definitive book on Art Deco posters. With 340 in colour and large on the page, I doubt if anyone will publish anything better, though as William Crouse says in a short essay about poster collecting it does not include movie, political and Russian ones. The ten chapters in the book look at poster art around the world from 1919 to 1939. I think the best ones involve movement in some form: aviation; autos and racing; railways; liners. Speed seems the ideal subject to bring out the creative best using vibrant colors, strong graphic shapes and sans typography. It'll be no surprise that Cassandre has the most entries in the index -- thirty-one. A thing that surprised me and it's really one of the strengths of the book is the very comprehensive captions. So, as well as large posters you can read a lot about the artist/designers and the companies that commissioned the work. The author really has done a huge amount of research to pull all this detail together and nicely, here and there, mono photos are included to tie in with what the text is saying. The production is as impressive as the contents. A tip of the hat to book designer Russell Hassell who created a simple, elegant presentation that lets each poster work, clean typography too. The spread chapter openers are particularly attractive with each left-hand page using four upright strips, butted together, taken from posters in that chapter. A surprise was finding four fold-out pages, one of which has three beautiful Lester Beall posters created in 1936 for the Rural Electrification Administration. As I've said already, I doubt there will be a better, more comprehensive book on Art Deco posters than this one. You can look inside the book at Westread Book Reviews, then click 2022 and March.
