Q: what is the material? Is it polyester?

It is a rollable thick, rubbery plastic or vinyl. I love them, nice and clear, a lovely shine, easy to clean. You won’t be disappointed

There is not any problem to paint - on my point of view. What are the results of it - you should try and see.

I have not had any issues with warping.

Yes, it will still lay flat. You just need to put the other side on the table. They will be flat again after being used several times.
