You can use any plastic item with a rounded tip, or even your fingernails. My grandson uses a toy syringe.

how is the drawing color chosen?

You can’t choose the colors. They just “happen”.

replaced battery today after about 7 months. opened battery slot, it was empty? did internal battery just die?? don't want loose battery with kids

All I can think of is maybe the battery wasn't in the slot really good and it slipped out inside the tablet if you give it a shake and here rattling in there that's what happened if you can't get it out or this keeps happening I would contact customer service and request a replacement tablet. Hope this helps.
