Vikings overall seems heading towards free falling as a series
Vikings season 5 volume 1 shows off all the tension, developing, between all the sons of Ragnar to the point massive war or fighting on and between those sides chosen by each son on who to support and how far willing take this feud of their even to point of their graves. I try not to do spoilers but so much action, drama, intense fighting and blood murder death scenes make you wonder what hell is happening on the screen as you watch it unfold in front of your eyes. Still a must buy for any Vikings fan of the show just have an issue with last episode of the season 5 volume 1 way they ended it between all the Vikings and what would have been based on paths taken.

Good product but some boring features.
Before we get to the menu we have to view one or two trailers - itโs boring. And there is no subtitles, only audio in English or French.

Remains Delicious, but a Bit Less Fulfillment
Vikings is still profoundly addictive entertainment, yet, it suffers from the lack of focus. The storytelling remains compelling, but is simply spread too thin. Season V part 1 spans geographical parameters from what I presume is Floki in Iceland to Bjorn in the Sahara desert, and everything in between. All the usual subplots, intrigues, betrayals, tactics, strategies, and battles, plus morre are encapsulated in ten 42 minute episodes. The wealth of story telling is overwhelming, and in the end, finds the Vikings junkie (I am one) wanting more, but curiously let down. The series is, by its name Vikings not Ragnar Lothbrook, but Travis Fimmel as Ragnar provided a focal point no longer available in the series. Perhaps Ivan the Boneless, with his avowed revenge toward Lagertha, amidst the squabbling among brothers, is supposed to provide central focus for the series, but nonetheless the intimacy the series once provided is being buried by the somewhat overplayed Ivar.Overall, the series is still delicious, but itโs over ambitious scope in the allotted time frame makes it somewhat less fulfilling.

How on earth did the History Channel get involved in this?
Well, it's all been said. I wonder how the History Channel can justify its involvement. As far as I am concerned the History Channel has lost credibility. We're at Season 5 and have long left the realm of history (not that there was much of it from the start....Kattegat is a settlement????? And Hedeby (Haithabu) is in the neighbourhood surrounded by mountains????? Yeah right!) - we have entered the realm of Michael Hirst's rather confused adolescent phantasy now completely and in pretty much every way. However the makers still have the nerve to promote this as a historical drama. I found myself not caring for almost any of the characters right from the start which is unusual for me and made me feel strangely relaxed. I was glad when creepy Ragnar and dumb Rollo dropped out. They should have get rid of Lagartha and Bjorn too. elaborate fantasy hair-dos and costumes - quite silly really. Having said that, the reason for me to keep watching is that I liked King Ecbert and Helga. Oh and I enjoy watching Floki. I very much like how this character has developed, matured and aged as he went through life with all its ups and downs. Hardly anyone else does! Lagartha was just given a white cheap wig but still looks as young as in episode 1. Gustav Skarsgard is a superb actor and is portraying this wonderful character of Floki so well. It's such a shame that he is being put aside in little scenes in Iceland now. I wish there was more depth to it. Or rather, I wish the writer had stuck to the real historical events which were quite epic even if the historical Floki had nothing at all to do with the fictional Floki in this show. Or even better, I wish the writer had kept Floki in the main story. Without him it's all rather dull and boring. Lagartha is a real pain in the neck these days. And why do Ragnar's sons grimacing so much and have these weird face twitches? It makes me cringe. I read that part 2 is being released later this year and I find myself no longer interested. Not even Floki can keep me hanging on anymore and it looks like Rollo is back too to join the terrible cast. Ah no, I can do without that.
