It says WiFi 6 but only mentions 5ghz and 2.4ghz. Does it not have 6ghz?

Actually, it's the Asus ET12 that's wifi 6E (i.e. has the 6Ghz band), the XT12 is just wifi 6.

Anybody know how this compares to the XT8

The XT8 doesn't support the 160Mhz channel width on the 5GHz-1 band. The XT12 does. Also, on the XT8 this band is 2x2 tier, whereas the XT12 is 4x4 on all three bands (2.4Ghz, 5GHz-1 and 5GHz-2). Be aware also, that the XT12 devices are capable of link aggregation to provide multi-gig backhaul, they have faster processors and twice the amount of memory (1Gb) compared to the XT8. They're quite a lot larger and heavier than the XT8, and look cool with a glow from the transparent window at the top.... ;-) I've got a pair of XT12 routers, replacing my 2 x XT8 routers. (I've re-used one of the XT8 devices as a 3rd AIMesh node). All have wired ethernet backhaul. The XT12 devices have an extra 2.5Gb ethernet LAN port for wired backhaul (only 1Gb for the XT8). Make no mistake, there is a definite step up in range compared to the XT8 (in my experience). But probably not worth £300 extra per pair for most people..

Do these support ethernet backhaul between the two?

Yes it does. Either dedicated 5G WiFi or LAN backhaul

I have a huawei hg659 modem with vodafone gigabit broadband. i assume i just connect one of these to the modem and plug the other in elsewhere?

Yes connect one XT12 with an Ethernet cable from a router LAN port to the XT12 WAN port. The other XT12 will connect wirelessly using the second 5GHz channel. If you already have an Ethernet cable going in to the red WAN port on the HG659 then plug this in to WAN port of the XT12.
