Appropriate for beginners and intermediate learners, it teaches Esperanto clearly and well, explaining Esperanto grammar in context, never just theoretically. The second half of the book contains many interesting stories and short texts, which provide further opportunities to practice and use one's new knowledge of the language.

At least the best I own :) A reasonably modern and complete introduction for English speakers. It is also now far more affordable than many others (under $10). It includes a short but complete course in Esperanto which explains the structure of the language. The second and very useful part of the book is a reader in Esperanto. The best way to master the grammar and structure of a language is by reading well-written prose. If you buy one Esperanto textbook this is probably the one. I also recommend (for English speakers, especially for Americans) "Being Colloquial in Esperanto" by David Jordan which is available online.

This book's a bit dated by now, but it's still perfectly charming, and it does its job. Esperanto's rules can be covered in a few pages with small enough print, so the distinction between textbooks is what else is there. The book spends a considerable amount of time in its intro - about 62 pages - discussing the complications of language, Zamenhof, and such. It then jumps right into the lessons. Each chapter covers a different part of the language with the rules, example words, some exercises, and a short script in Esperanto, detailing a particular part of the fictional Miller family saga. After the structured lessons, the rest of the book is a lot of reading material in Esperanto as well as various tidbits, useful idioms, and mini-lessons sprinkled throughout.The only thing I can really hold against this book is the dictionary at the end only goes Eo->En, not very helpful for a beginner. Still, though, I learned almost everything I know by checking this book out from the library, and I eventually bought a copy here on Amazon. I'm content with this version and didn't feel like getting the newer one with the questionable artwork.

This will will help you understand the rules of grammar and give you various examples to try. It also discuses the history of the language, a chapter on pronunciation and has a glossary at the end. Keep in mind this book was written before the age of twitter, so it is not the most up to date. Having said that I find the book to be excellent, and better than the few more modern books out there. I used this along with duolingo, and feel comfortable speaking the language now.

This is an excellent textbook. In my opinion, model translations of the stories would have been beneficial. The first ten lessons provide reader-friendly vocabulary and grammar instruction supplemented by interesting dialogs and conversations which enhance language learning. I benefited a great deal from this book during my review of Dr. Zamenhof's fascinating language Esperanto.

This ebook is a very good staffer book on learning this language. Just take your time with it and you will be speaking Esperanto in short time.

Easy to use work and study for beginning Esperanto study too becoming fully conversational. This is the best Esperanto learning book I have seen.

THis book is very good indeed either as a main course or as a supplememnt to other courses. I'm not sure whether there are accompanying audio files / Cds, but if used as a supplememntary source of learning Esperanto, then you can get audio files with other Esperanto courses, or even on-line, in order to check your pronunciation.

Diese Rezension bezieht sich ausschließlich auf die Kindle-Ausgabe des Lehrbuchs. Ich konnte das Buch nur auf mein Fire-Tablet herunterladen, für den Paperwhite-Reader war es gesperrt.Die Größe der Datei beträgt über 140 MByte bei 330 Seiten. Es ist nur dem Äußeren nach ein Kindle-Buch. Die Papierausgabe ist ein Fotoreprint einer früheren Ausgabe, und vermutlich man hier die PDF-Druckdatei in Bilder umgewandelt und als Kindle-Datei formatiert. Damit hat man alles verschenkt, was ein E-Book ausmacht: das Suchen im Buch, das Inhaltsverzeichnis, die Verwendung von Links, eine vom Leser einstellbare Font-Größe. Wollte man der Welt unbedingt ein E-Book präsentieren, ohne sich Gedanken zu machen, welche Spezifik dieses Medium hat? Aber für den Kindle-Preis kann der Käufer nichts verkehrt machen, also ja, kaufen lohnt sich. Eine Maß Bier ist teurer und weniger langlebig.Das Buch stammt aus dem Jahr 1988. Natürlich kann und will ich als Deutscher nicht beurteilen, ob ein englischer Muttersprachler damit gut und schnell Esperanto lernen kann. Didaktisch hat mir der erste Teil des Buchs im Überblick gut gefallen. Hier und da entsprechen einige Erläuterungen nicht unbedingt dem heutigen Stand, aber das stört nicht. Aufgefallen ist mir lediglich, dass die Übungssätze relativ kurz sind, in den die Lektionen abschließenden Dialogen dagegen wird ein deutliches höheres Sprachniveau verlangt.Das Lehrbuch besteht im Wesentlichen aus zwei Teilen. Das erste ist ein klassisches Lehrbuch, das zweite nennt sich "An Esperanto Reader" und ist als Lehrgang für Fortgeschrittene gedacht. Es fällt auf, dass der Artikel »la« erst im zweiten Teil behandelt wird, ebenso einige Vor- und Nachsilben wie »dis-« und -ec-. Diese Themen wären besser komplett im ersten Teil untergebracht worden, so dass der zweite ausschließlich der Vertiefung und Anwendung dient.Der Esperanto-Reader ist überhaupt schwach. Er wirkt unaufgeräumt und wiederholt viele der Legenden, die sich die Esperantisten geschaffen haben, aber längst widerlegt sind. Dialoge und Texte spiegeln eine keimfreie Esperanto-Welt wieder, und so fällt es auch nicht auf, dass das Buch inzwischen 30 Jahre auf dem Buckel hat. Lieblingsthemen der Sprachfreunde sind Sprachbarrieren, Reisen (Wenn wir in eine fremde Stadt kommen, dann rufen wir einen dort wohnenden Esperantisten an, und er sagt uns, wo man preiswert wohnen kann.), die Geschichte des Esperanto und die »interna ideo« als Pseudoideologie, und alles das finden wir in dem Buch. Man merkt gar nicht, dass Briefe geschrieben werden und keine E-Mails, dass es keine Handys, Smartphones und Computer gibt, und das bedeutet, dass dieser Wortschatz nicht einmal im Ansatz vermittelt wird.Einige der ursprünglichen Bilder wurden durch aktuelle Fotos ausgetauscht, was das Buch als Datei weiter aufbläht.Ich gebe drei Sterne, wobei ein Stern einzig für den guten Willen der Herausgeber vergeben wird.

Il est certainement utile pour tirer de ce livre un bénéfice maximal de maitriser correctement la langue anglaise puisque toutes les explications sont en Anglais et puisque les commentaires relatifs à certains points spécifiques à l'Espéranto sont basés sur des comparaisons à l'Anglais. Ceci dit, le livre présenté en deux parties est remarquablement bien fait. La première partie fair en dix leçons le tour des points essentiels de la grammaire avec de nombreuses remarques fines et pertinentes. Cette première partie est agrémentée de beaucoup d'exercices corrigés et de petits textes simples dont on peut trouver à la fin du livre la traduction en anglais de sorte à s'assurer qu'on les a bien compris. Ces textes permettent d'acquérir un peu de vocabulaire et de s'entrainer à la mise en pratique des notions grammaticales des leçons précédentes. La plupart des mots qu'on y rencontre sont listés par ordre alphabétique et sont traduits juste avant le texte. Il me semble qu'une étude sérieuse de cette première partie devrait permettre d'atteindre un niveau B1.La seconde partie présente des textes d'un niveau plus élevé tirés de publications espérantistes. Cette seconde partie comporte également des approfondissements grammaticaux annexés aux textes qui se révèlent très intéressants. Les textes de la seconde partie ne sont pas traduits, mais un lexique Esperanto-Anglais à la fin du livre permet de trouver le sens des mots qui pourraient poser un problème.Le livre est présenté en version papier mais aussi en version électronique. J'ai acheté la version électronique et l'utilise avec plaisir. Toutefois il me semble que la version papier doit être plus commode pour accéder aux corrections des exercices et au lexique.
