Can I charge 10 Kindle Fires on it at one time?

Sort of. A dedicated Kindle Fire charger charges at 1.8 amps for full charge. If you put 10 Kindles on it, they will trickle charge -- the circuitry of this sort of charger has them "taking turns" until they're done. So if you had 10 fully drained Kindles, they might not all be charged fully the next day. But if you have 10 Kindles you're just using a bit (like you have students use them for a couple of hours), then this charger will top them off just fine.(This isn't just a Kindle answer, BTW -- all modern devices will charge faster on a dedicated circuit, and these sorts of multi-chargers use special logic to have the devices basically "take turns.")

We are using two units in a school for iPads. Has anyone had the problem of the power supply geting extremely hot, to the point of a potential fire?

No problems and I had it for almost a year... I bought good cables, maybe that is the difference? I do know that the IPad batteries can get hot (I have Apple products at home and notice this when they are charging one at a time). Maybe it is the IPads? Sorry, but I do not have a solution.

Is there an LED that shows the charging status of each individual port?

If you look in specifications, it says output AC100-240V. Don't know if that helps.
