Could this be mounted externally on the roof of my van. I want to cut a hole, mount this ontop to give some extra head room. Cheers!

No. This is the internal dome that goes inside the external dome that mounts on the roof. That way it creates a thermal gap. Similar to a thermal pane window.

This garnish is pushed up from the inside out or can it be put directly on the top?

Only inside. Another part ( sold separately) completes the skylight

is it smoke color and is it pre drilled for screws

Mine was not smoke colored (taped a piece of window tinting over it - works like a charm). It is pre drilled. My problem is that it does not fit in myroof configuration. Somehow the angle is different then the old one. I need to cut off a little of the corners of the roof beams - have not done it yet. According to my rv repair shop that is common.
