Really great, unique fuzz pedal
The genius of this pedal is in the "before" and "after" knobs. "Before" adds overdrive, just as a traditional overdrive would, so you can actually use this as a great-sounding overdrive pedal if you keep the "after" knob all the way down. "After" adds that weird-and-sputtery fuzz-tone characteristic that we all identify as "fuzz."The result of having two knobs to control the character of the fuzz medal is absolute magic. You can fine-tune the overall distortion pedal to your liking. More "after" and less "before" corresponds to a nice low-gain fuzz. More "before" and less "after" gives you more of a modern distorted fuzz. Then you have every other combination imaginable. You really can get any kind of fuzz tone with this pedal. Wonderful. The mini-toggle switch in the center of the pedal is a low-cut switch. The general idea with low-cut switches is that it makes high-gain sounds "tighter" by eliminating the low-end frequencies that can make things muddy. In my view, this switch is useful for versatility's sake, but having all that glorious low-end is what vintage fuzz is all about. Finally, a word of caution. When I first got this pedal, I plugged into my 5-watt, single-channel amp with no tone stack, just a volume knob. I was disappointed because the Carcosa sounded thin and shrill. I was able to get a good tone by keeping the tone knob at zero, but still... Later, I plugged the pedal into my Carvin Legacy half stack and it was like a completely different (and much better) pedal. So keep in mind that this pedal probably plays better with full-voiced, modern amplifiers than with little vintage low-watt amps.

What a fantastic, unique fuzz!
DOD is my favorite pedal company, and I own many DOD pedals. I love my Gonkulator and the Gunslinger is the world's greatest distortion pedal, full stop, and I will fight you over that. I would expect DOD to create a fantastic, unique fuzz, and they didn't disappoint.First things first: It's a DOD pedal so the foot switch sucks. I had my Gunslinger for six months before I had to replace the footswitch with a quality unit from Mammoth. I took it apart, and it looks like a quality unit, everything surface-mounted and solid. The case is definitely made from aluminum, not plastic, although it looks like plastic. According to DOD, the Carcosa has two bias knobs, but after playing it for a while, I think that the "Before" knob is actually a standard fuzz "sustain" knob and the "After" knob is a bias knob. I haven't been able to find a good schematic to really see. Anywho, what a unique pedal! Too many fuzz pedals just have a standard circuit- a bunch of transistors with a few pots to control the signal going in, tilt-tone and output volume. This pedal just eschews all standard conventions, with at least one bias knob and possibly two, a standard overdrive-style tone knob as opposed to a fuzz-style tilt knob. If it doesn't actually have a standard fuzz knob and actually has two bias knobs, then holy crap, it's a fuzz pedal with no fuzz knob! The switch in the middle sounds like it boosts low mids, and it's handy for when one wants to work with a clean or dirty amp. Down for dirty, up for clean.Every fuzz sound imaginable is available here. Smooth square wave sound (After at around noon, before about 3) like a Big Muff, germanium tonebender sound (Before kinda low, after pretty high) and a splatty, zipper sound (before at zero, after at max) and my personal favorite, the QOTSA sound- both knobs around 11. It will probably never leave my board.

This thing rules
Huge range of sounds, from sweet to insane. The gated fuzz and the treble adjustment and the low cut are all fun to play with. Also, the non linear knobs take some getting used to but they open up a world of possibilities. Worth reading the manual. Awesome pedal.

This thing is never leaving my pedalboard
Seeing as I'm already a fan of Robert W. Chambers' the King In Yellow (one of my fav0rite books EVER!) and a bit of a dirt box collector, this pedal was a no-brainer for me. I was just waiting to find one on the used market (NOONE seems to be getting rid of these things!), or for Digitech to drop the original price. At $69, I finally pulled the trigger.I figured this thing would be a fun sludge/doom-type box to toy around with from time to time. However, I've been able to get a great black metal tone with it, and it's now the main drive on my pedalboard. Just total F***ING Darkthrone-like fury the minute you hit the switch. Like the headline says, it's not leaving my board.

This Listing (69.99) Is Sending Out Refurbs....
Plugged it in. It lit. Inserted guitar. Wouldn't play. Had a really stiff switch. Got it to play. Sounded heavy, gnarled , and detailed. Switched it off after 5 min, trying to go from clean then back to dirty. Switch was still very very stiff. When it finally depressed, light switched off-pedal was dead. Thanks a lot.

Killer!

Want an articulate fuzz? This is it.
I've owned a Way Huge Swollen Pickle, Joe Bonamassa Fuzz Face, cheap Joyo octave fuzz and none of them played nice with my gear. All were quite muddy and inarticulate. I'm a humbucker guy and own Les Paul's exclusively. One has 57 classics and the other burstbuckers. Amps include an '83 Marshall 2203, a Rivera era Fender Deluxe Reverb II, and a Mesa Dual Rectifier. This fuzz plays nice with them all. The before and after controls are unique and play a major role in tailoring your tone. But are very easy to tweak to your taste. As does the toggle switch. I find that you can go from mild overdrive (kind of gritty but very articulate) to all out low-fi chainsaw roar with this. Cleans up nice with the volume knob too. My favourite quality of this is how well it retains note clarity, definition and attack. Sustain is there too of course. If you're looking for a fuzz that will allow your guitar and amp tone to come through, plays nice with 'bucker's and seems to work well with a variety of amp circuits this is for you. And it's cheap too! Highly recommend this one.

Nice and versatile compared to other fuzzes
This is apparently a 5 transistor fuzz circuit. I think of it as a bold muff-face, but that could be how I'm inclined to set the knobs. Great range on each knob and some interaction between them so it's great for tweaking. Hi Cut helps get rid of fuzz fizz. I recommend this if you like tweaking to find your favourite tones, and you want something with attitude.
