How many increments will the gauge read for a 6" sending unit? Every 1/8 tank (9 positions)? Or only 5?

It is kind of more of a fluid movement of the gauge because of the Rio stat so it will register appropriately as the fuel goes down. It does not just move one quarter to 1/4

Gauge goes to full then back to empty in just a few seconds

Couple things 1. Check your ground for bad connection 2. Check power positive side also Check connection to battery

Can the sensor be mounted to the bottom of a fuel tank and then reverse the ground and sensor wire?

I dought reversing the ground at the sending unit will reverse things. But it might? The gauge is calibratable. There are instruction that will explain how to calibrate gauge. You could wire up the gauge and sending unit on your bench and test everything before installing it in the tank.
