Sage is being burned since centuries and smoke is spread for cleansing and protection against negativity. This is also a natural incense. When you burn it, the smoke takes away negativity and leaves fresh and positive environment. Heat resistant bowls made of iron/ mud/ abalone shells etc can be used for burning sage bundles. There could a possibility that you may feel smell very irritant however the point to be noted down here is this is not the smell of sage but the negativity surrounding your aura is getting removed.
