Catherine Smith has now given us the 4th Edition of the best publication I've found about the real world of policy writing. Her common-sense approach to various types of policy writing--including examples-- has made her book the "bible" for my graduate policy writing classes.

If you have to get it for a class...
Required for a Graduate course in research and writing. If you have a background, it is probably not a good buy but for anyone without a public policy background it is a very easy read with a lot of examples.

don't assign this book for college reading if you love yourself and your students
the author gives terms a seemingly random definition and then continues making points using these terms, eventually leading to her sentence making no sense. from the first chapter she writes as if she's just trying to meet a word count, her sentences are choppy, and bulleted lists are inconsistent in language and points. examples and references are lacking, and when present their relevance is unclear. overall, i don't get why someone who can barely write is writing a book on public policy. this is a travesty to student reading lists.
