UPDATE: I used the shampoo and didn’t notice an unpleasant scent like I did when I opened it the first time. It left no residue after shampooing and left my hair in great condition so I do like it. Not as much as CD Monoi, but I would by it again. Older Review: I hate the smell!! It’s like a fake chemical smell. You cannot identify anything close to even describe it. I’m wondering if I received a fake product because I have used CD monoi shampoo for years which was pure, clean and smelled beautiful. Like monoi. When L’Oréal bought Carol’s daughter they discontinued monoi shampoo & conditioner and are putting out inferior products. If this black vanilla is really legit, I have zero clue why people like the scent. I cannot use this stuff.

For reference, I have thick, dark, wavy hair - a bit coarse and very frizzy. I live in socal and the hard water destroys my hair. So, I had to change my hair routine. I use a hard water detox shampoo (loreal) once a week and follow up with a moisturizing shampoo (carols daughter vanilla) right after to complete the double wash, then use the carols daughter as needed the rest of the week. Then followed by the wave babe conditioner (after any wash). The last step is the sun bum air-dry cream. The moisturizing shampoo is a big part of the routine; it doesn't strip my hair of the natural oils but gently cleanses and moisturizes after the big wash and the subsequent washes. My hair has completely taken a new form, its glossy, soft, hydrated, and doesn't have any residue and is no longer fizzy. With a busy schedule I can't style my hair every day, and with this routine I don't need to. It's saved me so much time and saved my hair from constant heat damage. I have used every high-end product, anything I could try from US, Japan and Europe and this hair routine works better than anything I have tried in 30 years (including $200 pureoligy products). So, it's totally worth the price for me.

Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla smells amazing and works great on different hair textures, keeping both my and my husband's (different hair types, curly multi-ethnic and curly caucasian) hair healthy. It is also gentle on my sensitive skin. It lasts awhile because don't need to use a lot when shampooing. I did not think I'd find a budget-friendly shampoo that is sulfate-free and good for my curly hair, and I never thought I'd care enough to have a "favorite" shampoo--Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla has become my favorite shampoo. Update: I still like Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla, but unfortunately it does not work as well with the high iron city water where I live now. I still use it when I am visiting somewhere else. Also, maybe I am more use to it now, but I don't think it smells as amazing as I first thought. I am dropping it one star since I can't use it with my current water and the scent is now subtle.

The smell of this shampoo is really good. it define my hair while in the shower. It cleaned my hair and added moisture to my hair. I always heard about Carol's Daughter and I am glad I got this. It is cheaper and I do not have to spend so much money for a shampoo bottle.

My daughter and I each use this. We use all Carol’s daughter products.. we love it. It’s hard to find in our town so I’m grateful Amazon carries it. This is a spray conditioner that you leave in. It smells so good

I'm in the process of growing out my hair after a bleach damage DISASTER almost a year ago. My 2b/2c hair is extremely dry, coarse, damaged and brittle. Any sort of shampoo, even low poos and very mild surfactants, makes my hair feel like straw and turns it into a complete tangled mess. This shampoo is so good that I can run my fingers through my hair as I rinse it out, something I've never been able to do with shampoo. It's very thick like honey and lathers very well so a little goes a long way. I have long hair and I use maybe 2 pumps. My hair is wavy and I find this doesn't weigh it down at all, but my hair is also very thirsty and porous. This is the ONLY shampoo I will use between clarifying as it does not strip or tangle my hair and also effectively cleans it. It smells heavenly too. For those with coarse damaged hair I highly reccomend adding the hair oil to your routine as well.

This bottle is super annoying and the pump can at times get stuck and the bottle gets crushed inward because of the pump drawing out air of the bottle. This sort of packaging is horrible. Aside from the product itself. Product is not what it has been previously
