What color is the fiber by itself (with or without light shining through it)? Is it white, like it seems to be in the pictures, or is it more clear?

All of the fiber that I use looks white before lit and a slightly warmer white with light passing into the fiber. But the quality of the light depends upon the light source, how bright and at what temperature. (Color).

Can you cut it multiple times amd srill work?

Yes, it can. this fibers is cuttable, still end glow by light box(not including) after cut

I am going to use 12, 3 to 4 inch lengths. do you sell a light source or suggest one that takes 2 aaa batteries?

So 2 aaa batteries is 3 volts 3 volts is the operating voltage of standard LEDs so you could run every thing off a few LEDs wired together. Just u tube this and you will find a few post showing how to flatten the end of the LEDs hot glue the fiber optic to the ends and use shrink tubing to lock each set together. Run all the wires back to your two aaa batteries. And your done. Note only two batteries more will increase the voltage and require resisters to bring the voltage back down to 3 volts.
