what is the diameter of the top?

Inside diameter is approx 1 7/8 inch and outside diameter is 2 inches. Their sides are straight and they have a nice seal for the top of the jar plus the lid.

What is the lining made of?

Inside the jar there is no lining on the walls. The little plastic white lining that sits between the opening and the lid is soft plastic and from what I remember bpa free

If I use the jar without the plastic liner will it still be seal tightly?

Yes. I absolutely love these jars for making my homemade lotions and toothpaste.
