Incredible, Unprecedented Support for a Fantastic Sound Machine
I bought my Sound+Sleep SE a bit over five years ago and it's worked great that entire time. However just recently it has developed a glitch where after playing for several hours it'll suddenly emit a fast stuttering noise and then power off. I contacted the company's support department and they immediately responded (within seconds) and their belief is that the memory card has gone bad and they are sending me a replacement memory card first class free of charge. I'm totally blown away by this level of support, especially as the product is no longer under warranty. I wish all businesses operated at such a level. Now as to the machine itself, I love it, which is why I've used it every night for over five years. My favorite settings is the "Meadow" setting with both "Selection" lights lit. I do hit the Display button to turn off all the lights though before I go to bed. But I just love the crickets in that particular setting.

Creates an Indoor Oasis
The sound quality, and the range of available sounds, is outstanding. We have just begun to use the machine—but initial results are very pleasing. Operation is simple and "intuitive." This is the 3rd "noise machine" we have purchased, and the most expensive. So far, it is worth the investment. It would seem that it tops the "buyer's guides" for good reason.

Better than expected. Functional
Device itself was surprisingly better than I thought it would be. Don't like some of the sounds but there are some that are good and that manage to drown out the noise I am stuck with from a poorly designed apartment layout that has a maintenance room that backs onto bedroom wall with no sound insulation and 24/7 equipment running. This device makes it tolerable to sleep. I am sure the technology will get better over time but at least its something. The base rubbery part which cable inserts already has little tears right from start which is not ideal but its underneath and hasn't affected functionality so haven't marked down for this but could be improved on a future model.

System Failure
I purchased this sound machine about a month ago, and within two weeks the sound machine would just shut off after 15 minutes of operation. It was dead. It would not turn back on. I called the manufacturer, and they were very nice and replaced the unit within 1 week. I also received a return label to send the original unit. I received the new, and worked well....... for about a week. This time the shut down of the unit was different. The unit would shut down after 15 minutes, but I was able to reset the unit by unplugging the power source. This did not solve the main issue though of the constant shut down. I though the issue may have been the voltage fluctuation at the receptacle. The readout on my UPS battery backup showed a power fluctuation between 118 to 121 volts. So in order to correct this, I purchased an electronic voltage regulator to automatically adjust and maintain the voltage at 120 volts. After setting up this new auto voltage regulator, I pugged the sound machine into the auto voltage regulator, and after 15 minutes, the unit still would shut down. I then assumed that the line voltage signal was "Dirty", with noise. So I purchase a electronic line conditioner for a high fi system to clean the line signal. After installing the auto voltage regulator and the line conditioner filter in series, the sound machine still shuts down after 15 minutes. I suspect that there must be a manufacturers defect in the circuitry, since I experienced the same issues with the two units, with a clean and constant 120 volt power supply. I've given up on exchanging the sound machine with another replacement and have decided to take the loss, and just purchase a different manufacturer. This was a costly lesson. I do not recommend the purchase of this sound machine.

It's good, but I thought I'd get more for the money
UPDATE Sept. 8, 2018. I have 2 of these machines now. I keep one by my bed, and the other in my living room for relaxation. My original review still holds. I still don't use many of the sounds this machine provides. But -- it's steady, reliable, worth the money I paid, and I do recommend it. END of update. I bought this unit for a limited and specific number of features that were hard to find in one unit. I wanted pink noise, brown noise, at least two fan noises, a decent water sound, and something like a meditation sound. I got them all in this one unit. White noise is too bright and high-pitched for me, but I use pink and brown noise for sleep, and also one of the two fan sounds. I use “brook” and “meditation” for simple rest. So, I knew why I bought the unit and I did get what I wanted. That said, I figured that for $116, I might get considerably more. That hasn’t been the case. I think the sound quality on this unit is a B-, considering the price. I also own a $20 Homedics unit which has a better rainfall, ocean and “summer night” (Sound+Sleep calls it “meadow”) sound than this unit. Although this unit has 4 water sounds (waterfall, rainfall, ocean and brook), I am hard pressed to tell the difference between the first three. They all sound a lot like static to me. I do use “brook” and like it. In addition, the “selection” button is touted as a way to augment and vary each of the 16 sounds, thus giving you 64 variations. To me, it mostly adds “push” to the majority of sounds — louder, heavier, more static but not significantly enhanced. I knew when I bought the machine that I didn’t care about the following sounds: baby (heartbeat), crowd, city, rides, home etc. I don’t use them. I also don’t use the adaptive button, since there is no competitive noise in my home. On the plus side: 1) The front display is easy to manage. The sound dial rotates easily and the volume buttons push easily. 2) It appears to be well built. There is heft to this unit. It is relatively large. 3) The sounds I do use appear to be loop-free and consistent. 4) I am not a high-volume person, but this machine offers a lot of volume. 6) There are LED lights for one/off and the timer, but you can shut the lights off. 7) The timer (30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes) actually turns the entire unit off, not just the sound off but leaving the unit running. Not every machine does that; I like it. Overall, I am glad I got what I wanted in one unit. For me, it works well when used for sleep or rest. I just expected more for the money. I expected that the majority of sound options would be a knock-em-dead sounds, and they are not, in my opinion.

SPEND THE MONEY GET THE BEST! This Unit is so far superior it’s worth saving for!
This machine produces sounds that are far more realistic than units of it’s type, less canned, never looping, and utterly effective in providing layered, calming background noise for sleep or study. By comparison these sounds are so FAR supeior that they suspend disbelief! My husband wakes up sometimes to blurt out that it’s raining before drifting back off again, cute? You get 40 (FORTY!) easy to dial choices too! Tip: Take a cellphone screen shot of the menu or tape an index card of your known favorite settings nearby. There is such a broad range of choices I guarantee you will NOT like them ALL, (how could you, it’s variety) but you will have favorites. The machine remembers that you like Rain program 4 and Ocean program 2, so just because you turn to a new sound, your old settings per category will stand till you change them. If I go from 4the program Rain to 3rd program Meadow, then play with Crowds program 1 for awhile, when I go back to Rain again, it’ll be set at the 4th level where I left it! This company really tries to give us EVERYTHING! Like, perhaps Brown, Pink or Whitewash sound isn’t FOR everybody, so you can time it to send the baby to sleep but shut off before your spouse hits the hay. Push a single obvious button to select auto shut-off options after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes OR you can let it just play indefinitely till you hit the on/off power key! The machine is lightweight for TRAVEL but still quality made and attractive and I like mine right next to my pillow! (Needs an outlet) I’ve tried several products (4) to reach this conclusion and I WON’T name them, they’re fine, but compared to THIS? They’re out of their league! If you buy a $19.99 unit you’ll GET a fraction of the AWESOME possibilities offered by THIS handsome beauty. This unit even has an ADAPTIVE option in which with one obvious button click activates a sound level sensor and your effects programs will swell or taper off in sync with surrounding ambient noise, so if a discussion gets ‘heated’ you won’t wake the baby, and the ‘nature’ builds and tapers back to normal as you do, Heck, you could even vacuum, and all baby hears is the wind blowing in the trees, (strong as it needs to to mute you out). Genius! It doesn’t have EVERY great sound effect under the sun, like windchimes and blizzards, distant droning lawn mowers, popcorn popping, cats purring... ah well. But I was SHOCKED by what it DOES include! A City Cafe 😃(omg) Passing Traffic 🚙, Fireplace Crackling🔥 and each VERSION of a sound type adds more layers! The first setting of Ocean is just waves smashing the breakwall, setting two adds seagulls & wind, setting three adds seagulls, wind, foghorns, passing boats and I forget all else, but each program lets you build on it. I enjoy falling rain, but I PREFER a cracking loud thunder storm and this machine provides these choices! LLove-Love Love-Love Love it! ♥️💗💕❤️

Best Purchase In A While
The Adaptive Sound technology is amazing if you have a noisy household. I could see some not liking the Adaptive Sound technology if they are very sensitive to changes in sound. I wasn't as sure about this feature when I first tried it, but I adapted to it in a few minutes and my brain then tuned out the sound changes. What I really needed this for was for when the household is noisy from 9pm to 12am and then noisy again 5am to 8am. It works incredibly well for objects like dishes and cutlery clanking around, loud conversations, laughter, movies/TV, and loud noises in general. If it's noisy and you're desperate for sleep, it's worth it. The Adaptive Sound technology will adjust with the noise to match that noise level. It takes a minute to adjust to it when you first turn it on because of the sudden increases in sound, but then you tune it out and can fall back asleep. If you really try to focus on indoor noises, you can sort of hear a bit of the noise being canceled, but I'd say like 95% of the noise is blocked depending on the sound. It will not really work for loud noises that are in the room with you, like someone talking or a pet barking. Not to say that it doesn't work, it works really well, but the sound level changes are loud and hurt your ears. If someone walks in the room to talk to you, the sound of rain will race to catch up to their voice level at max volume. It's not a negative since that's a feature and can be easily avoided. It would work well for tuning out something more like a mini fridge humming, air purifier, etc. It would stay in a good decibel range for those. It also worked really well on the 4th of July. It completely blocked out the noise of the fireworks.

Build Quality NOT Sound
I had one of the regular S+S white noise machines with adaptive technology for a number of years. When it finally quit -- the built-in memory card started messing up, as I recall -- I upgraded to this SE model with more sounds and two USB output jacks, very handy. Unfortunately, after some months on the job, the first SE unit I had started shutting off randomly. NO good -- I need white noise all night long because of the lead-footed neighbors upstairs. I contacted the manufacturer, and they sent me a new unit under warranty. All went well until -- I think my cleaning lady tripped over the audio cable I had run from the S+S to my Bose Wave Radio. That damaged the sound machine's output jack, causing the radio to emit loud buzzing and no sound in one channel. So I have to agree with other reviewers who love the device when it works -- but who decry the dicey build quality, as the machine seems to have its share of problems. I am currently trying a program called Noice from the Google Play store, running from my Lenovo tablet into the Bose radio. So far that seems to be working pretty well, although the program has no adaptive technology. In summary, I wish Adaptive Technology would release a program to Google Play, enabling us to take advantage of the company's excellent sound-disguising software without their problematic hardware... PROS: * Excellent non-looping "soundscapes." * Adaptive technology pumps up volume in reaction to intruding noises. * Decent built-in speakers. * Ability to add texture to soundscapes. * Two USB outputs, one audio output, one audio input. * Superior customer service. CONS: * High failure rate. * High price.

Very cool
I love my Sound+Sleep SE. The sound is rich and natural — not harsh or mechanical — and it helps me fall asleep much faster. The adaptive mode is amazing: it adjusts gently to the noise around me and keeps the room calm. I sleep deeper, wake up more rested, and honestly consider this one of my best purchases for better sleep.
