how or where do you get the extension bed up to 42"?

Item TCLC10XB is the extension bed for both lathes KWL-1018 and KWL-1018VS. Item TCLC12XB2 is the extension bed for lathe KWL-1218VS.

I have an older version w/out variable speed can I retro fit one for better control?

Yes, I believe so... Penn State Industries sells a Variable Speed Midi Lathe Conversion Kit. I would check with them to verify it works with your lathe. From their description it looks like it will fit or mount on varicose lathes.
