What is the 'alter' switch? A phase shifter? Or does it change the humbucker into a single coil pickup..It can't be both by the way, so a 'yes' or 'no

It swaps up the pickup combinations from the selector. Hard to explain so I’ll just list them. Assume that the humbucker is made up of 2 coils, which I’ll call Coil 1 and Coil 2. Coil 1 is closer to the fretboard while Coil 2 is closer to the bridge. Unless stated otherwise, pickups are being run in parallel. Also assume that the Bridge is referring to the ful humbucker unless otherwise stated. Alter Switch OFF Position 1: Bridge only Position 2: Middle and Bridge (Coil 1 only) Position 3: Middle only Position 4: Neck and Middle Position 5: Neck Alter Switch ON Position 1: Bridge only Position 2: Bridge only (Coil 1 only) Position 3: Neck (series), Middle (series), Bridge Position 4: Neck and Bridge (Coil 2) Position 5: Neck (series) and Middle (series) If any of this is confusing to you, I promise it gets easier to remember, and if it helps, the pickup diagrams for each position is on the Ibanez website under this particular model.
