Big
I bought this with the half off rebate - as a result it was very reasonable in price. I wouldn't pay full price for it though.Prior to owning this unit, I owned an Officejet V40 which I was quite satisfied with. The reason that I replaced it is that there are no decent drivers for current operating systems. I also had noticed that is was larger than current all-in-ones with similar functionality. However, it was easy to use and worked realiably for 5 years. In comes the HP 3050. While it does its job fine - I do have three negative comments. It is a monster in size! I have no idea why it is so large! It's color scanning errors on the side of being too red. Finally, its menus and functions are not as intutiive as they could be.

Beyond expectation!
I've used this product in my home office heavily for 6 months. It has worked perfectly and has opened a new avenue for me to send info to my customers. It scans my documents and turns them into a pdf quickly and I then email those attachments to my cusomers. I've always had to use a fax in the past and fax machines really degrade small print, so the scanned image I send is perfect and can be read by my customers. Everything on theis machine is great. Couldn't want anything better, and especially for the price I paid for it. As usual, HP has the best printers around.

Liked it fine, until...
I liked the printer fine -- wasn't delighted with it, but wasn't terribly unhappy either -- until I upgraded my MacBook to Mac OS X. Then I find out, unfortunately, that HP does not support full functionality for this printer under Mac OS X, and I'm far from the only one unhappy with this situation, and HP has refused to update the printer driver for provide full functionality. (See[…]) for just one forum for the complaints. As a result, I would not buy this or any other HP printer again. I just can't count on it the software being updated for a decent length of time.

Vista problems
Added this machine to my new Vista-powered notebook. Although the printer drivers will automatically install and let me print, none of the included software on HP's installation CD will work. So beware that you will get none of the supporting software for scanning, faxing, etc. Chat session with HP was no help -- they're "working on it" with Microsoft.

... had the original HP 3050 and it has worked great for 8 years
I had the original HP 3050 and it has worked great for 8 years, especially the printer function. I stopped using the fax a few years ago. The scanner was decent but it was not a flatbed. And just like others have said, HP stopped supporting this printer and the fax and scanner features stopped working. It is a pattern. They change the software so that features don't work, and you are forced to buy a new machine.I'm not playing their game. I bought a Canon scanner, and I will eventually replace my printer with another brand, but not HP. If this is how they treat loyal customers, then I don't want to buy their products anymore. Back in the day, HP was king of printers. Now, not so much.

Good printer at reasonable price
The printer works great so far. Shading/dithering on graphics is not as smooth as more expensive printers, but text and line art are clear and sharp. The printer is surprisingly fast for its price, with pages coming out within a few seconds, even from power save mode.Works for printing with the generic CUPS PostScript driver in Linux. Can use HPLIP for more advanced functionality. Windows seems to steer you toward the PCL driver though a PostScript one is available on the HP website.Cons are that the "HP Toolbox FX" that came with it, was difficult to install. I had to make several attempts including reboots for it to recognize that the printer was even plugged into the computer. Go to the HP website and download current drivers and the software update for Toolbox FX before you start. I bought printer in late January, current drivers were from previous August, drivers on the CD in the box were from more than a year before that. Also doesn't have network interface or option to install one internally.

Great laser printer, simplistic but a workhorse and very economical on ink.
Terrific printer and very economical on ink - laser. Doubt if any of them are still in production. I own three and they are workhorses.
