if you have brass fittings (quick connect fixtures) and alumimun hose fittings (most of them are aluminum), you will get into serious corrosion problems ("galvanic corrosion") if you leave them connected together for any length of time. you should use these plastic adapters WHENEVER you connect brass to aluminum, so you will never be able to disconnect them after a few months. these are cheap insurance against ruining your fixtures, and give you a shutoff value to boot. i would recommend bringing them indoors for the winter if you live in a hard freeze area, as they are plastic and might crack with serious cold weather. they are sturdy and not likely to crack or split unless you are in north dakota and leave them out all winter. im in north carolina and still bring the inside! they are strong and not flimsy.

I have 5 rain barrels and there is a plastic shut off valve on every hose connected to the rain barrels so you can get water out of them for your watering can. I have had these barrels for 4 years and they are in the hot Alabama sun 24/7 so it was inevitable that one of the valves would break after a few years. This is a good value because you can replace the used valves as needed from the 5 pack and the price was right. None of my local hardware stores had these valves in stock when I needed them. Good purchase from Amazon!

These are great for seldom used on/off locations of our hoses on a 3 acre garden. They seem to work as well as the metal ones.
