Spouse is over 6 ft tall, and he looks like a clown sitting in a child's chair. It's not a very big chair at all. The max weight capacity is 300 LBS, but honestly I'm half of that and after owning the chair just a few weeks it's already falling apart. Avoid it!

why does it smell and when does it go away?

That smell is not just from flame retardant. That smell comes from just about everything man made such as: the foam cushion, artificial leather, laminates, carpets and so on and so forth. The reason some new products do not have the smell is because the manufacturer has the good sense to let that thing air out in the factory for a few days before shipping it to retailers that immediately ship it to customers.
