Before there was Jurassic Park , there was a fantastical world where humans and dinosaurs lived together in peace. Revisit this magical land in Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara. Before there was Jurassic Park , there was a fantastical world where humans and dinosaurs lived together in peace. Revisit this magical land in Dinotopia: Journey to Chandara. After many years of searching, artist James Gurney discovered in a used bookstore a never-before-seen journal by the nineteenth-century explorer Arthur Denison. Denison's previous travel accounts, published as Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time and Dinotopia: The World Beneath , introduced a lost island where dinosaurs and humans live together in peaceful interdependence. Now Professor Denison and his saurian companion, Bix, set out on a perilous journey to the forbidden empire of Chandara. When their personal invitation from the emperor goes missing, they are forced to cross the border penniless and in disguise. Every step of the way, Denison documents in exquisite detail the creatures, characters, and architecture he encounters: a village composed of three ships propped by on end, a fifty-foot-tall Brachiosaurus outfitted for fire fighting, an Allosaurus tending its hatchlings, young pilots air jousting on giant Pterosaurs, and much more. The land of Dinotopia is conjured by a brief, but vivid narrative and a beguiling variety of visuals, including maps, cutaway views, and mechanical diagrams. The lives of the humans are intertwined with those of the dinosaurs and ancient mammals, all of which are actual species portrayed according to the latest scientific research. By turns whimsical, dramatic, and philosophical, the journal radiates a life-affirming vision that will cast a new light on the overlooked wonders of our own world. Review: Great Dinotopia Book - James Gurney is the greatest. I missed this one when I was a kid so I was happy to get it for my son who was engrossed with the art and story. Like owning fine art!
I have been a fan of Dinotopia for about 15 years. I wondered if Mr. Gurney would ever take us back there. He did with as much skill and depth as expected, perhaps a little more. This is a childrens book that appeals to this adult. As an painter, I can only admire and one day hope to produce something this great. If only I could paint a cloud like this man...This is a lavish book of fantasy paintings that could only be described as a treasure. Some tastes do not care for this style of painting-the Hudson Valley School. Its retro style florished before photography. Light and color captured every detail of the landscape. Now, in our HD world, this style is obsolete, right? Gurney's depiction of the creatures who actually lived on this planet, lets the viewer imagine what went over all of those bones that are found every year. Not only that, his "lost world" that is further documented. Children will devour this. Dinosaurs are fun, scary and in this book, loveable. The whole Dinotopia mythology is set in the mid 19th C. Perhaps the world had an unexplored appeal back then. We have satellites that document every corner of the planet now. Perhaps, this age of innocence works so well here because there are no more frontiers on the planet. Other than space, there are no more places to explore. That is why I love it so much. I finished it and was left wanting more. There are so many other villages and ruined temples left to document. The plot is not relevant here. The setting and the dinosaurs are the stars. You have to love Bix! Chandara is a perfect place to spend your vacation in.

Beautiful and Good story
when i was 8 my parents gave me dinotopia. The paintings are enough to capture the imagination and bring the fantasy island to life. This is a great sequel to the original

A Beautiful Addition to the Series
It's a beautiful book full of pictures illustrated by the author, plus the addition of Mr. Gurney in his studio drawing, painting, and modeling his creations with friends. I am so lucky to have gotten this book to complete the Dinotopia series. If you have the other three, get this one too. You will love it.

Incredible art
It is not common any more to see child books with such beautiful art, but Dinotopia Journey to Chandara, has some of the best art i have seen so far in a kids book. The colors inmerse you inti the story and portrai the ambiance very well. Also the art on the face expreccions make you understand more deeply how the characters feel.

Fun for all ages
I've been a fan of Gurney's Dinotopia books since the first one was released, and they are now favorites of my young kids as well. Journey to Chandara is a worthy successor to the original and The World Beneath. As always, Gurney's art is beautifully rendered, and the story stands with the first two books, and far ahead of the now out-of-print First Flight, which is much more of a children's book than any of the others.

A magical journey to a forbidden city.
An enchanting journey through a fantastic land filled with intelligent talking dinosaurs and humans. They exist together in harmony. The book is filled with beautiful paintings that draws you into the world of Dinotopia. Written in journal form, explorer Arthur Denison tells the story of his journey to Chandara with his faithful companion Bix, a Protoceratops. This is the 4th book of the Dinotopia series by James Gurney (author/artist). It's a great stand alone book, but I would recommend reading the other 3 first.

Awesome
From a artist's perspective must say its a Masterpiece. The amount of work and detail that James Gurney has put into each of his paintings is simply mind boggling. A collectors item, cant fix a price on such creativity.
