There is some padding, most backpacks have soft padding in there. I would get a laptop case. There is a buckle that you can clip together, so unless you fall a lot- there shouldn't be a problem.

Q: I have an 18 in laptop. Will it fit in this bag?

Up to a 16" would be the largest fit for a laptop.

I know this is a bit late, but I love this backpack. I'm 5'1" also and it doesn't look too big on me and is not heavy for my body. I actually have gotten compliments on it and it's been helping me with my back problems. I can fit so much into it I love it.

Hmmm. That might be pushing it. The lap top size is not a proble or the planner, water bottle, binder, makeup bag, etc. BUT... Depending on the thickness of the 4 textbooks, and size of the lunch box, that might be too much
