My son is about to turn 10. Would this be age appropriate? Or is this more of a young child type of quality?

my granddaughter was 8 when I gave this set to her for Christmas. I also bought her the box of 25 prepared slides to go with it. she loves it and has used it a lot. It is very age appropriate. IMO

Is the telescope any good for seeing things besides just the moon and can the tripod be switched out for one that is taller?

The telescope tripod can be changed easily, but you'll have to find one compatible or make some adaptation. The telescope can see the Jupiter cloud belts and Jupiter moons and the Saturn rings easily.
