can this be used to power on a ventilation System ?

Depends on how much power you will draw through the plug. Philips recommends you only use it with lights, however it is rated at 2400w 220 - 240v. I use mine to control a waterfall pump.

is the smart plug only for use with lights? I want to use it to power on my TV, will it work?

It will switch most appliances on & off. TV’s generally power up in standby mode so you will still need to operate the power button on the TV remote as well.

I have my tv, sky box and playstation plugged into an extension lead. Can I plug that into a smart plug and use the app to set a timer for them?

Yes in theory you can, its really intended for lights apparantly, however I use mine to switch my waterfall pump on when my PV solar reaches 1KW. The only reason it might not work is that if you cut the power to your TV and then switch it on again, does that actually start your TV? I have to switch on my TV's with the remote, when the power is on
