Very capable radio at a great price
I currently, or used to, own several Yaesu, Icom, Alinco, Radioddity, and Baofeng radios. I think this is my second TYT. The TYT TH-9800D is performing very well but I've only had it for a few hours. It's not a cheap looking build and feels solid, so I expect it to last a while. (Knock on wood). The Chirp programming went well, though I always need to remember how to get to the finer details in Basic setup (which is usually staring me in the face). This is kind of a clone of a Yaesu FT-8900 at a reasonable price. The speaker sound is good, it has clean signal output, the display is bright, and it's a nice looking radio (it doesn't have quite the same ruggedized look of the Yaesu). One oddity, though... the box arrived without any tape or seal, so it may have been opened before or could be an open box display unit from somewhere. Quite happy with the purchase.

Great Quad Band Radio
I am not sure what or why some of the feature ratings really apply. How do you judge sheerness or thickness? Well, the radio is not all that thick, maybe less than 2 inches. Size wise it is good for a mobile radio as it has the detachable front. But I am using it as a base station with a TekPower 23 amp power supply and it seems to be doing great. I have not tried other bands than VHF, but I did get the TYT Quad band antenna to go with it and It can pick up distant repeaters and Hams from neighoring states. Is is the second radio. The first one seemed to have a problem resetting when the PTT was pushed for more than a few seconds and It also seemed to be hard to turn on and off. Their slight push on the power button was taking more than the one second in the manual. However, this one seems to be doing really well as I mentioned. I would recommend it as there are not that many Quad band radios available for this price range. You could get one of the Quad Band radios which are 25 watts for about half the price, but then you may only get about 20 - 25 miles range.

Decent for the Money
Nice built quality and button and front key features. Arrives with FCC compliance for 2meter & 440 (70cm). These can be unlocked if you dare and the settings are only available with the Factory Software. Running Windows 10, software works fine. WARNING! There are 2 ways to unlock freqs like a Baofeng, but beware, if you use CHIRP, all settings will be missing if you do the MOD. I saved an image of the original Factory Software & options. Then imported radio and saved those settings first. Same with CHIRP, imported stock radio and saved dated image. Then tried the MOD and yup, no CHIRP settings. Resetting radio to factory WILL NOT REMOVE EXPANDED TXT FREQS. However, if you made backup first, just restore to the radio and it will put everything back where it should be, legal freqs and CHIRP settings available. Ran mine temp to 24amp power supply with cigarette plug wired on back as an experiment. Power settings on meter came in spot on except 1. Low 5watts, Mid2 10watts, Mid1 20watts exactly. High power @ 40watts which is decent for running thru 24amp supply wired to cig lighter adapter, then cig power supply to radio. Passed power test @ 100%. I have a friend who has one of these, always sounds excellent with stock mic. When you setup freqs, select MEDIUM on the narrow or wide band settings. This will give best sound with perfect clean output. Also like the 4 P buttons on Mic. You can program them in the Factory Software or Chirp. Great features that my Yaesu FT-8900R lack in options. Nice air flow from back heat sink and fan. Purchased 2nd one while available for basement. Running mine in bedroom with ladderline jpole dual band antenna on 5 watts hits repeaters in opposite direction loud and proud. Get the Asurion Protection Plan as this radio only has 3 mth warranty to CHINA!Update: Having problem figuring out the cross band repeater function. Seems to only work in VFO mode not with saved memory channels (simplex on left, repeater on right).

Don't Waste Your Time - Two Defective Radios (Maybe a bad batch?)
TYT TH-9800D PlusThe first radio I received wouldn't transmit so I requested a replacement. I was unable to access any repeaters with the second unit but it would transmit. Yes, everything was programmed correctly. I found that the microphone with the first unit I received was defective, so I packed up the "old" mic with the replacement radio and sent it back.Everything seemed fine for a bit, other than some noise on my audio from the cooling fan, but then I started having issues transmitting. Everything appeared to be good, but others would tell me I was full quieting and then gone in an instant. This all started after it was too late to return the radio. I ordered an Icom ID-5100A and called it a day.

I just can't quit this radio
Ive had one of these "9800s" go bad on me after 2 years of very heavy use. Still giving it another go. Just has so much going for it. It give a legit 50 watts and 40 on 2m and 440. (Have have little use for 10 meters and 6 meter FM).800 memory slots, can seemingly recieve almost every VHF UHF band (minus 220) has a nice AM revoeve mode on 10 meters. Radio can have it's freq range expanded significantly with a bit of research. The crossband repeat mode is a personal favorite feature to "remote" HT to base use.It will get warm, so I would try to stick to the mid-high power level (25 watts) in most cases. I think I fried my old one using high power too often in crossband mode.So much radio for the price. I would recommend the 3 year Amazon warrenty, as these radios have a reputation of failing a bit more then other bands. But they are wonderful for both mobile and mobile analog use. Very good speaker, TX audio and good receive sensitivity.

Get the name brand
Worked great for a while. Then I’m replying to a ham, I’ve got the mind keyed, and i’m talking, and suddenly I hear the other hams voice. It simply stops transmitting! If it overheated, there was no indication, and it didn’t take much use / duty cycle to cause it... wasn’t keyed down awful much. Another time it was just “whining” - shut down/back on solved it. It had other moments of having a mind fart, but powering off cleared it up.The menu structure and front buttons are good.Four bands is nice, but keep in mind it’s FM only (I believe it will receive AM aircraft, but it will NOT transmit AM). Besides, the sunspots are DEAD for years to come. I’m going back to a 2M/440 rigBe careful: if you bump the front knobs, the switch in it breaks! Mine did. Returned that radio and had problems with a duplicate radio.

Nice Little Radio
I actually bought this radio about a year ago, and just got around to installing it in my truck. I am very pleased with it! As with any "new fangled" radios with fewer knobs and menu driven programming, there is a learning curve, and this one was pretty easy to get through. It has great receive sound and paired with a Shark Antennas SH-2M58 2M/6M/70CM Magmount Antenna, I am easily hitting repeaters 25-30 miles away with no problems. This radio is also programmable via CHIRP. One of the many features this radio has is the ability to give each channel a "name", but also be able to toggle to view the frequency also. This little radio, at 50w is definitely worth a look!

Good solid radio for the money.
I use this mobile and at home. Excellent radio for the money. Plenty of power, does all 4 ham bands. (10m/6m/2m/70cm) Plus 446 PMR, and 11m CB Radio. Good on airband receive too. Most of the features of its Yaesu clone for 1/3 the money. Very sensitive on receive as well!
