This doesn’t have very good reviews. Many people complaining it doesn’t work from the start. What’s the problem and has donner addressed this?

A working product was re-shipped to customers with this issue. This product has a two-year warranty period, during which any quality problems occur, we will provide after-sales service.

Is this made out of real solid wood?

I'm pretty sure it's MDF, but the surface (vinyl, maybe?) does have wood grain impressions on it. The legs are metal with a wood-looking plastic/vinyl coating, too. Frankly, I think it's better that it's not solid wood, as it's considerably lighter and likely stronger than wood would be. I own the thing and you can't really tell it's not solid wood unless you're closely examining it.
