This camera fulfills a very specific need that no other camera or phone can fulfill. If you are attending, say, your children's concert or performance and you can't carry a DSLR or Mirrorless camera you need something small that needs to have specific features : 1. It needs to have a reasonable zoom 2. It needs be discreet so as to not make any noise 3. It needs to have a viewfinder so a big bright screen doesn't distract fellow members of the audience 4. It needs to produce reasonable quality video and stills, possibly in low light 5. It needs to have removeable batteries so you can keep multiple cheap spares 6. It needs to have relatively good AF and continuous shooting 7. Be able to take selfies with a flip screen with as good a quality as possible 8. Be able to tilt the screen down for high up shooting 9. Uncropped 4K Video would also be good 10. Have a good resolution (this has over 20mp) 11. A flash would be good so in an emergency in total darkness a still can be taken 12. Ideally have a few other extras like a microphone jack 13. Eye detection would be good (this has it!) 14. Ideally from a manufacturer with a pedigree of making photographic tools Frankly there is no camera phone or any other camera that fulfills this criteria. Yes this camera is expensive, its more expensive than the APS-C DSLR / Mirrorless bodies I have, but I found myself with the above mentioned issues and whilst I bought a HX80 some years ago, many years ago, it has proved to be a bit lacking, for starters the HX80's Sensor is over 4x smaller (4x less light being captured), no 4K video and AF whilst OK not good enough at times, too many times! This RX100VIIA (RX100M7A) is by far leagues better (albeit without a bigger zoom at the long end). This is the most expensive single photographic purchase I have made and in terms of the ratios of volume to cost, its crazy. I have only just purchased this so will see if it lives up to what others say, but playing around with it has been fun. There is a reason why these get sold out as soon as any retailer has any - these are simply Thee King of Compact Cameras. UPDATE : Worth every single penny. Extraordinary. If they ever make a replacement which is even better I will buy that immediately too. You simply cannot substitute this for anything else. Even the new iPhone 17.... that does nearly everything better, BUT doesn't have a viewfinder to use in dark audience settings (children's concerts), you cannot keep spare batteries (and one day you will have to throw the iPhone away when its no longer economical to replace the battery. The iPhone 17 also doesn't have a mic jack and can't take spare SD Cards. Yes the iPhone 17 probably overlaps a lot of this camera but with the really important aforementioned caveats.

I often go into dimly lit areas of museums and galleries to photograph artefacts and exhibits and hate using a flash because of the reflections from glass. Also its great to take photos that don't need a long exposure in such conditions without needing a tripod to steady the camera. Its also easy to get arty with this camera altering depth of field etc etc, and the data saved with each photo does allow you to easily determine what settings you used (or if in auto/semi auto mode, what settings the camera used). Plenty of great functionality (I can either transfer photos over USB - I'm pretty sure the SD card shows up as an external disk when the camera is plugged into a mac, or I can use the program downloaded from the Sony website - or I can use a wifi connection to transfer photos to my Android tablet (again need a free app from Sony, available from the google store) I've not used or stored the camera in hazardous or challenging environments, or abused it (I put a 3rd party screen protector on it, and carry it in a case when not using it) but it has stood up to use well. The M3 does have a different lens to the M2, I think the difference is that the M2 has more zoom range (gets closer to far away objects). If I try and photograph the moon for instance, its a tiny circle on the M3 (and don't actually have an M2 to compare the results against, but I'm guess it might not be quite as small an image) Truthfully if I want to photograph the moon I probably need to mount it on a telescope, or get an SLR with a big zoom lens. Because the lens automatically retracts behind shutters on standby or shut down, I wouldn't go looking for any after market screw on adapter to extend the lens range (or add a filter, or a mount for a telescope) Probably amongst its best features are the reposition-able display, which allows you to compose selfies (rather than take about a hundred of them blind), and for days when you are outside and the sun is shining in a way that would obliterate an image on the screen, an electronic popup viewfinder that can focus the image at infinity (I think) so even people with bad eyesight can use it without glasses (or with glasses probably) As a point and shoot camera its very functional and high specification. Excellent images in all the conditions I've tried it. Light enough for me to carry around all day, fits in my jacket pocket when I want to carry it there.

My go-to camera for the last 6 years, thousands of photos. So small, yet the output is as good as any mirrorless interchangeable lens setup, without the dust spots on sensor! I got the smallrig frame as I have some limitations in hand mobility and it makes it much easier to hold without fear of dropping it. I still use bigger cameras for more demanding situations like longer or faster lenses, macro etc but this does 90% of what I require. I'm one of those who prefers the output of a proper camera much more than a phone photo, so this pretty much comes everywhere with me
