For a beginning sewer, I would recommend the straight line bottom...and practice your cutout and sewing on cheap material first, before you use your original first choice material..good luck!! It is a beautiful pattern with varied choices..

Does the size used in the book the uk or usa?

I'm looking at the pattern right now, and the sizes are shown in both US and UK. I bought size A, which covers US 8-18, FR 36-46, or Euro 34-44.I hope this helps. :)

Could any of these be used to make a dress suitable for business attire?

I think the sleeker cuts (views A and D) would be fine for the business workplace, but you'll probably want to Go with a solid color. It would be even more professional looking with a coordinating or contrasting blazer if you'll be meeting with clients.
