The Battle of Thermopylae
The expression molon labe comes from an account of the historic Battle of Thermopylae between Xerxes I, king of Persia, and Leonidas I, king of the Greek city-state Sparta, in 480 B.C. Xerxes demanded the vastly outnumbered Greeks surrender their weapons. Defiantly, Leonidas answered: “Molon labe,” roughly translating to “Come and take them.” While the Spartan leader staged a brave and noble resistance, Xerxes ultimately overpowered him. The Battle of Thermopylae (480 B.C.), while a tactical defeat of the forces under the command of the Spartan king, Leonidas, was a strategic victory for the Greeks that elevated their morale as they resisted the advancing Persian army who were later routed from the Greek mainland.
