Gloriously Simple
I spent over 10 years operating a handmade paper project that produced handmade paper in South East Asia. We constructed journals with our paper but none quite as nice as this one. The real leather and deckle edge paper used in this Modest Goods journal sets it apart from any I have seen.I'm not that familiar with cotton fiber paper. We produced paper from abaca fiber, so this paper feels lighter and more frail in comparison (paper money contains abaca fiber to make it more resistant to tearing). Deckle edges on these pages almost appear to be torn but that is probably just a quality of the cotton fiber. These pages seem to have been dried on a cloth sheet that is a type similar to the bag this journal comes packaged in. This method produces a sheet of paper that has a tiny square pattern to it rather than being smooth. This is less desirable to write on but still usable. These single dipped pages are of a fairly uniform thickness. Some have more discoloration than others but that's ok and adds to the handmade, artistic look of the paper. No where do they say that the paper is acid free or PH neutral. This information would be helpful as I have seem some high or low PH handmade papers fall apart after a few years. I would also like to be reassured that the paper is produced in a way that is not harmful to the environment. Much of the handmade paper produced in Asia is not made in ways that are environmentally friendly. This is an exquisitely designed product, from the off-center curved edge of the cover flap, to the double wrap-around leather strap. I like the way the key, attached to the end of the strap, tucks into a leather loop on the cover to fasten the journal closed; gloriously simple. Pages are bound by stitching leather through the middle folds and the leather cover. There is also a leather loop on the inside of the cover where a writing instrument could be kept. Every detail is well thought through and beautifully done.I went to the Modest Goods website and tried to learn more about their company. They are based in the San Fransisco Bay Area. It's not clear if their products are made there or constructed overseas. They do say that "A portion of our profits is allocated towards ensuring proper healthcare and education for children across Southeast Asia." I wish this were more clearly explained and the actual percentage was given as well as the countries they serve. I would love to hear personal stories from the artists who produce these products as well.Overall, this is just a fantastic journal that seems to be well priced and beautifully made.

Great look, sturdy feel.
I picked this up because I really like the look of these journals. It looks like something right out of a pirate movie. It is a solid book too. not flimsy. The pages are thick and the book itself is heavy and feels sturdy and while the seller says ink won't bleed through the pages, I have not written in mine yet so I can not speak to that but the pages do seem very thick so they may not bleed. I am not sure what I will use this for. I don't journal so we'll see but I just can't get enough of the way this looks and feels.

Absolutely beautiful
This is a beautiful journal. It’s exactly like the photos. The pages are thick and look perfectly aged. The leather is soft. I loved it so much, I immediately ordered the largest size. If you’re on the fence, buy it! It’s even better in person and I am so happy with my purchase. Thank you!
