My 11-year-old son recently got into model trains. That's all he asked for this year for Christmas. I got this set as a base and we added tracks and other Bachmann cars. First off, this set is quick. I expected it to be a little slower because it's made for kids, but I don't think it is. Second, it's still new but the cars glide over the track (both included and purchased separately) smoothly. Every once in awhile, you might need to readjust the car back on the track. Third, it's just plain fun. But you definitely want to consider adding a couple of track pieces. Right out of the box, it only goes in a small circle. We added a couple of straight pieces and some curves when we moved it down to the basement and it's a much bigger track. We've had so much fun with this model train set. This is a great starter set for a younger child looking to get into model railroading. It's more affordable than purchasing tracks, controller, and cars individually, it's easy to use, and it's Thomas. Who doesn't love Thomas?

I usually write reviews 3-6 months after purchase to ensure they operate as they should. Unfortunately, Thomas train motor burnt out within 2 months of purchase. This is with infrequent use with less than 3 hours of use. I have reached out to Bachmann and will wait for their response and update the review. When the product was working - I would have given it 5 stars. Update: after back and forth - Bachmann US sent me a new replacement. I appreciate their warranty support.
