Incorporating the thinking, feeling, and behaving dimensions of human experience, the tenth edition of Corey's best-selling text helps you compare and contrast the therapeutic models expressed in counseling theories. Corey introduces you to the major theories (psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality, behavior, cognitive-behavior, family systems, feminist, postmodern, and integrative approaches) and demonstrates how each theory can be applied to two cases ("Stan" and "Gwen"). He shows you how to apply theories in practice, and helps you learn to integrate the theories into an individualized counseling style. New learning objectives identify key aspects of each theory and focus your study. Compassion and Empathy Extremely Important for Patients as Well as Between People
I've just started reading this book but already greatly impressed by the writing skill in presenting difficult concepts. I am a nonexpert but have been blessed with the insight to understand the importance of interactions being described to the relevance to the theraputic setting. I find it highly disconcerting that practices and concepts routinely used are not more widely recognized and exercised between ordinary folks. People speak of love then are unrealistically critical of others. Our filters and flexibility in thinking are very much related to the traumas we have experienced and the age they occurred! !

Knowledge is Power
It is a textbook, so it's not exactly can't put it down reading. However it is quite well written and engaging for a textbook. It has great and easily digestible information about the creation and development of various psychological concepts, theories, and treatment modalities. And it has pictures! I like pictures. Without pictures I would never have known that Albert Ellis liked to wear his belt around his chest. I mean, that's data, right?

Textbook for class.
Had to buy this book for a class. I find the book heart read because it repeats a lot of the same information over and over again. I feel that way about a lot of Corey’s books like there’s an over emphasis on the information and sometimes I want to just get straight to the point.

Guess I got lucky?? Perfect book.
I guess I’m one of the lucky ones who got a book in great shape. I went back-and-forth for a few days reading all the negative reviews and sweating paying the price for a book whose binding might break and “cheap pages” would fall out. I went for it, hoping I could return it if that was the case, and I was thrilled to receive a perfect copy! The hardcover version of this book came in mint condition. 10th edition, tight binding, very nice quality pages. This textbook cost $150 for my counseling course at the university store, and I got it here on Amazon.de for €73,50. Total bargain. The book itself is worth well more than it’s price tag. Valuable foundational information for any aspiring counselor to begin their journey with. Covers all the major theories and includes excellent questions and challenge materials for each chapter.

Essential counselling and psychotherapy university text
Disliked that it is so expensive for such a think book. Also, it went up forty bucks in a week. Now for the book itself. Brilliant introduction to the counselling and psychotherapy professions at university level. The chapters are well organised with individual chapters on all the major therapy styles - person centred, psychodynamic, gestalt, existensialist, cbt, and new styles of family and feminist therapy. There is also a strong focus on applying therapy to multicultural groups. I really love the historical context given to the original therapists. Often therapy styles coincided with the social, economic, and cultural environmemts they lived. There are also lots of exercises, and reflections at the end of each chapter. I find the hard copy (papeeback version) so much easier to read than the electronic version. The accessible and almost conversational style of Corey, makes it the most readable textbook I have ever read. Only criticism, would be more diagrams to illustrate concepts, and end of chapter joumal article references. I expect the latter in an expensive university text to validate the high cost of this thin text. In closing, strongly recommend this for any future counsellor or psychotherapist globally.
