Q: how are these installed? what are the straps for?

The hip pads have Velcro on the back side and the kit comes with Velcro tabs that can be attached to the seat. The straps then go around the seat post to help hold them in place. The foam shims are used to adjust the fit.

Q: Can the kit be transferred to a different kayak or is the mounting hardware permanent?

The kit includes hard plastic strips of Velcro that work with the Velcro on the back side of the pads to hold them in place. The strips are attached to the seat pan with rivets so once in place it would be difficult to relocate them to other boats, however, the pads themselves are equipped with a strap and buckle system that wraps around the seat posts to keep them secure. One solution would be to apply peel & stick Velcro on the other boats so you can easily transfer the pads.
