Question 1

Could someone explain how this thing works?  The description isn't very helpful. How useful would this be for a police officer?

As for installation: 1) Open tool2) Locate side with diamond file3) Turn tool over to view bottom of handle (the end opposite the pliers) 4) Locate slot in the end (there is no corresponding gap on the other side of the tool)5) Insert end of clip or lanyard ring into slotNote: The catch for the tools (spring-loaded lever on the bottom) engages the recess in locking end of the clip or lanyard ring. Depressing the catch will allow you to remove the clip or ring. As for usefulness:I love it. I carry my Wave in my right pocket using the clip. For a cop, I think it would be great because it allows you to carry the tool in places other than your belt (which from a civilian's point of view is already festooned with equipment). You could carry it in a pocket on your pants, or clip it to other equipment. I hope this helps.

Is it possible to have 934850 clip in original grey steel? I have a surge grey not black..

They're only shipping it in black oxide but it says it's made from stainless steel. If that's true, you can just get your green scotch bright pad you have in the kitchen sink to wash with and rub it off giving it a dull Grey look.  That should match your knife perfectly.

Will this accesory fit a Leatherman Surge Multitool?

It says it right in the description of the item that it does fit.  Additionally though, I have a Wave, a Surge, and a Charge and these fit all of them.  I personally use the pocket clip because having a full sized Leatherman on your keys is a little cumbersome.
