can you use vertically? (not stacking though)

If you mean standing them on their sides (side-by-side or in different places), I don't see why not. The metal frames are sturdy. I have my bins stacked three high, and they don't sag or anything like that. If nothing is stacked on top of yours, I don't see how they might be over-burdened.

Can a California king size comforter fit in one of these?

A fluffy king size comforter would probably not fit. Folded sheets would. We use ours to store hats with small brims. Woman's sun hats with large brims do not fit.
