After I wash my clothes with the berries in the small muslin bag that is supplied I open it back up and hang it to dry so the gathered top doesn't stay wet. Before putting it in the wash I pull the cord closed and tie a loose single square knot so it doesn't accidentally open in the wash. Although that is just me. The stitching and cord are probably tight enough without this happening. I searched a long time. I saw these years ago but were too expensive. So I caved in to the advertisement of plastic free laundry sheets. But what they don't tell you is 'plastic free' means no plastic bottles. They all have plastic.

WOW. I began studying de-tox and became very aware of chemicals and the damage they have been doing to my body. Now, at 53, I am super sensitive and have to watch what I wash my clothes in. So, I threw the Tide away and finally took advice from a lovely lady, about trying Soap nuts. I had never heard of them. You get lots of them and some liquid too. I have only had to use about 10 of them so far, over and over and they are still cleaning my clothes. They leave NO trace of powders, no smell but everything is SOFT and CLEAN and you KNOW you are free from the poisons of chemicals that hurt your skin. (remember, the skin is your THIRD KIDNEY!) This is a Natural Product and comes with a small linen draw-string bag that you put the nuts in to. How simple. My husband is fussier than me and he loves them. Tiny little 'brown nuts', like off a tree, that smell vaguely like vinegar but don't let that put you off. The clothes smell perfect. (IE. they do NOT smell at all). Also, you save money because they last forever! Perfection for washing day.

I had wanted to try these for a while, but I hesitated because I'm used to "real" soap. I wash a lot of clothes, about one or two loads a day, and I was really surprised by how well these soap berries actually clean. I have been using them for over a month now, and have not had to re-wash anything, everything has come out clean. If you like strong, perfume-scented clothes (like Gain) then you won't like these. Although the soap berries themselves have a slight, earthy scent, the clothes don't have a smell at all....which I love. The clothes are actually clean, not masked with perfume. I was concerned they wouldn't work because I wash in cold water, and these need hot water to soften them and bring out the suds. I soak them in a cup with a little bit of hot water before I put them in the wash, and they work perfectly. I also put a clip at the end of the little bag because trying to untie the wet strings is almost impossible. A strong plastic clip not only makes it easier to open the bag to discard the used berries, but also makes it easier to find in the wash so you don't accidentally throw it in the dryer. I use about 5 or 6 berries/nuts for each load, and toss them in my worm bin when they start to lose their color. Another thing you can do with these... Heat a handful of them to almost boiling in a cup or so of water, let them sit overnight...strain and mix with a bit of vinegar, glycerin and lemon essential oil...makes a great dish soap. I have not tried them for shampoo yet, but that's next on the list! These things are the best, and can be used for so many things. I didn't think I could be so excited about a berry.....but they are pretty awesome. :)

I used my soap nuts the day I received them. I was so excited to use an alternative to laundry detergent. I have sensitive skin and almost all detergent makes me itchy and I have had a rash on the back of my legs that won't go away. I went to my parents to do laundry and I didn't want to be there forever so taking advantage of their huge washer I stuffed the washer and did a load equal to two normal sized ones. I put five soap nuts in the bag and washed the clothes on cold. The clothes came out smelling clean but not perfumy. I was skeptical so I smelled attention areas on the clothes such as the armpits. Most was clean and smelled like nothing except of garmets I knew were extra soiled. They had a faint hint of the residue foul odor. Next time I will lighten the laundry load and use 6-7 soap nuts. I'm amazed that these little berries are so effective at cleaning.

I am sensitive to chemicals and salicylates, so I have been looking for something that would clean our clothes without making me feel sick. I have tried many natural products (Seventh Generation, Lifetree, Earth Friendly), but they left the clothes feeling heavy, as if they weren't washing out all the way (no matter how much detergent I used) and even though they are natural, they still put me on edge. I was reluctant to try the soap nuts; "Too easy," I thought. "How could they possibly work?" But I am glad that I decided to try them because I am happy to report: they do work! I use a white vinegar or peroxide spray to pre-treat areas that might stain. My top load washer has three water levels, I put 1/3 C of baking soda in for each level (i.e. 1C for the super load), drop the bag of soap nuts in the bottom of the tub, start the water, and put in my clothes. I use the extra soak (15 minutes) and I take the bag of soap nuts out before the rinse cycle. The clothes come out smelling clean, looking clean, and feeling clean. There are some stains that don't come out right away, but I have noticed that they do fade with each successive pre-treat and wash. I'm sure if I was able to use something stronger in a natural pretreatment they would come out first time, but that is not an option for me. I am very happy with this purchase. Oh, and the soap nuts wash a lot more loads than I expected. I squeeze the bag after each wash to see if they are still producing suds and keep using them until no suds appear when I squeeze it a few times. I purchased these on 7/25/13 and I received them the next week; it is now 9/3/13 and I have only gone through 10 of the soap nuts. I recommend this product.

Love soap nuts/soap berries. It's all I will wash my clothes with now. I started with a small amount just to try it out and I have finished my bag and will be ordering more. I love it. It leaves my clothes clean, naturally. The berries have a slightly vinegary smell to them but that doesn't linger on your clothes. Your clothes will not smell like anything, which is a draw back for the people who are used the that detergent smell but I love it. My family has sensitive skin so all the chemicals in tradition detergents irritate skin but no one has a problem with these at all. All I had to do was to put 5 berries in the pouch that was included and throw it in the wash. I took it out before drying the clothes but occasionally I do forget and no harm has been done at all. It's a really easy, affordable and effective all natural alternative to detergents. I also love the concentrated formula (which I hear you can make yourself by boiling the berries). It worked great as a pretreatment for stains and as a carpet cleaner. It got out all the messes my 2-year-old was able to make! I have also seen that you can use it for other cleaning purposes and will have to try that out too! I would love to use this product for all of my cleaning needs! Very satisfied and will continue to purchase these all natural soap nuts/soap berries.

I have had a Love/Hate relationship with these berries or “soap nuts” as others call them. Great for allergy sensitive individuals, but the ability to clean mostly depends on warm to hot water to breakdown the berries to get the cleaning agent released into the wash. For me these take an additional step for cold wash to full saturate the berries in hot water, then add the solution for best results in cold water wash. Most washes they are OK, but tough cleaning I still like a plan soap detergent with and oxi booster added. Still better really big dirty loads. Best for normal wash, or with a good soak after releasing in hot water first. Yes I use them, just not under all circumstances unless I am willing to take pre-soak steps that normal laundry does not require. For me a Win-Win 50% of the time, eco-friendly but not a miracle cleaner for all needs.

I never write reviews even if I am not happy with a product. So with that being said, I have been replacing everyday products with safe ingredients or less plastic in my life. To be honest I wasn't expecting too much from these soap nuts, I thought if nothing else I could use them on towels with a little bit of detergent to use them up and never buy them again. I did a few loads of laundry and I didn't smell anything (so use to the smell of chemical clean with perfumes), I wondered if they were truly clean, seem to be. So the next test was going to sell it for me or add to my list to never buy again. My husband has a zip up heavy duty jacket he wears outside to snow blow or work on things. After about a month I can smell this jacket as soon as i walk into the mud room and I throw it in the washer. His jacket was my test. It smelled CLEAN and with no cover up smells like name brand detergents. It was the 3rd load of laundry from the same soap nuts except I did add 1 more because I really thought it needed a new one to help that jacket with body odors. We don't have clothes or anything to try with tough stains yet but my thought is, if it's not strong enough to get those out, then there is other things I can use to remedy the stains.
