UST 30-DAY Duro LED Portable 700 Lumen Lantern with Lifetime LED Bulbs and Hook for Camping, Hiking, Emergency and Outdoor Survival

This is a great lantern. I have bought three different types of lanterns, and I like this one the best. I don't use them for camping or "survival" situations, though. I use them in my kids' rooms. Our rule is that, by a certain time, they have to be "in bed." They can still be awake and can be reading or drawing or something, but they must be in their beds and the regular lights must be turned off. I've used the clip-on lights before for their books, but the batteries seem to run out so fast. Invariably, they fall asleep with the clip-lights on, and I'll come in the next morning and find their reading light still on. After a couple of nights of that, their batteries have drained to a point that the light is not bright enough to read. So, I've now been experimenting with some different lanterns and, like I said above, this one has worked the best. Why? First off, the light is "defused" through the glass. As a result, you don't have the "blinding" experience of being able to directly see the lighting element inside. I think this is far superior. It's the difference of having a light shade versus a naked bulb in a room (the latter ends up being like an interrogation room). Despite the fact the the light is defused, it still lights up the room just as brightly as the other lanterns. Secondly, the light has a couple different brightness settings. Some other lanterns have this, but others do not. So it's nice to be able to toggle from the brightest setting to a lower setting. Third and finally, as I mentioned before, my kids invariably forget to turn off their lights (whether it be those clip-on lights or the lanterns), and they end up being on all night. I've had this particular lantern for about a month now, and it is still going strong on its original batteries. We use it with my youngest son when we read a book to him before he goes to sleep, and then I toggle it to the lowest level and he uses it as a nightlight. If I remember, I will come back in his room later and turn it off once he has fallen asleep. The older ones use it to read, etc. Like I said, the light is pleasant (not blinding) and the lantern itself seems to be able to run for hours. So, five stars in my book!

This little adventure started when my son's boy scout troop decided to spend summer camp at a national campground (Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia) instead of the local campground in Ohio. It turns out that "The Summit" doesn't allow propane lanterns, and the scoutmaster wanted to know which families had battery-powered lanterns to use at the campsite. I was looking to replace my old battery-powered (8 D-Cells) lantern, as the brightness knob was malfunctioning, so I used this as an excuse to buy a new lantern. I looked at a few review sites and became aware of this one on the "wirecutter" site. I was pleasantly surprised to find it on Amazon for about half of their estimated price, and the reviews looked good, so I ordered one. I couldn't be happier. This is much smaller, lighter, and brighter than the lantern that it replaced. The removable shade and bottom hanging-hook allowed us to hang it under the rain-fly at the scout camp. It's nicely bottom-heavy which keeps it from tipping-over accidentally. We've used it quite a bit: on the porch, on hotel balconies, and in dimly-lit corners of the basement. The small size has even allowed me to use it in place of a regular flashlight in some cases, such as checking salt levels in a water softener (not that anyone would normally do that... that's what the flashlight app on your cell phone is for). There's no way that the old lantern would've fit into a small space like that. This may not be bulletproof, but it's not a light flimsy piece of junk, either. It's been a nice, reliable lantern that exceeded my expectations. I haven't actually left it running for 30 days to know if the claimed battery life is accurate or not, but I have gotten a lot of use out of it.... even left it on for hours at a time, and I'm still on the first set of batteries.

Weather related power outages are a reality for many of us, and there are lots of solutions for "When the lights go out" Candles work, are relatively inexpensive, but if you have children or are tired they also present a danger. Coleman style gas or propane lanters are really useful, eliminate the flicker of candles, but you still have to be mindful of the danger of fire and their globes and tops can give one a nasty burn. Battery powered incandescent lights, and flashlights are useful, but most only run for at most an hour or two depending on the unit, and the freshness of the batteries of course. Fluorescent lanters are extremely useful, provide a steady stream of light and can be very compact as well. They tend to run for relatively long time periods on batteries, and are a good choice. But at our home, when the power goes off the first thing I reach for is one of my LED lantern style lights. There are some cheapie units that emit a bluish or reddish glow, this unit gives off crisp, clean, bright, white light. Battery life is awesome and if you fall asleep, well no harm done, just a little less battery life. Therefor if you have young ones, or cats or dogs this eliminates any worry of fires. Additionally they come on with the light at full intensity and do not require any warm up whatsoever, unlike fluorescents. I bought this unit as an addition to the RayoVac Sportsman model that also requires three D sized cells. The UST lantern is well made and feels pretty darn solid with good quality plastics and fit well and render the lantern weather resistant- but it is not designed to "Throw into the pool." The globe can be removed leaving you with an illumination beacon similar to a bare light bulb and this is wonderfully useful for a room light, as there is a nook on the base allowing you to hang it up. Bright illuminates my 12 by 25 family room fairly well, and my 52 year old eyes can read on the low setting- and this is good for 30 days of use. I have not yet verified this, but I did read a review that reported this time frame was actually conservative. Wow, guess you don't have to worry about wasting the batteries by falling asleep there! The globe diffuses the light well and I have not had to take the globe off in order to see properly. The intermittent SOS light would be really useful in an emergency situation for say when you are camping, and might lead rescuers to you. Additionally this light is a great size, about as tall as a 20oz soda, but a little wider. It is pretty light weight without batteries, and the three batteries add their weight as well. It is a great lantern for camping for all these reasons. If you are a motorcyclist or serious backpack camper you might prefer a smaller lantern, but on the other hand you give up a lot of usefulness and functionality by doing so. For an emergency light, useful for reading, walking to the bathroom, kitchen or any other part of your home this lantern "Shines" brightly. The unit also has what they call a "Lifetime" warranty on the box, but of course that is only good as long as the company is in business, which hopefully will be a long time. It would be great for most campers and it really is the only lantern most of us would ever need, period. There are brighter lanterns, there are smaller lanterns and there are those that cost less- but this unit strikes a wonderful balance while still having a fair price and solid construction. Everything is as claimed, EXCEPT, the 300 lumens rating is misleading. Thought I don't have a spectrometer to confirm, I would agree that this lantern is very bright indeed. Problem? The light does not travel very far. Once you get beyond 5 feet from the lantern, the amount of light drops off like a steep cliff. Do not count on this being the main light source for your camp. Having said that, I would still recommend this to everyone. It is great for an immediate work area such as the camp table where you're preparing food. In fact, its proudest shining moment (pun intended) was when we took of the diffuser and hung it from the center of an ez-up. That lighted up the whole area under the canopy enough for us to play cards without the brightness at eye level blinding everyone. The lantern is only slightly bigger than a 20-ounce Gatorade bottle, no exaggeration. And it runs on 3 batteries as opposed to many of the monster lanterns that use 8 batteries. Though not quite as bright as using D-sized alkaline batteries, it works really well with rechargeable AA batteries (using size adaptor). Even after two nights of the kids playing with the lantern on high, the AA batteries kept on going. It is also pretty rugged. Can't tell you how many times the thing had been dropped but hasn't broken.

This is a great lantern. I spent far too much time looking for a camping lantern that ran on batteries and put out enough light to be useful around a campsight while not eating batteries like it was it's job. The product takes 4 D batteries, has a nice carry handle, and is much lighter and more compact than most other battery lanterns. The 4 light modes are great for adjusting to the necessary brightness, and the SOS setting would likely be helpful in an emergency. On medium this puts off enough usable light to see clearly for about a 15' radius when sitting on a picknic table. It's even better if you can hang it up higher on your sight. On high, this thing lights up a huge area very well. The small fold out hook on the bottom makes this easy to hang in a tent at night, and the low setting is perfect to light up a tent or to carry with you to walk out to the camp bathroom/tree. The cover of the lantern comes off for when you don't need to diffuse the light as much (such as when hanging in a tent) giving you added brightness over a smaller area. I haven't tested if this can stay on for 30 days, but it has worked just fine for several hours on medium for about 5 days without any dimming.

I just recently received the Ultimate Survival Technologies 30-Day Lantern so I haven't been able to give it any long-term tests or usage but I like what I see so far. I bought some relatives the popular Ray-O-Vac Sportsman Lantern (SE3DLN) for Christmas because it had good reviews and frankly costs less. I decided to try the UST brand because of the potential 30-day length of use. I like the solid build, it doesn't seem cheap. It is impact & weather resistant. This unit seems to be built better than the Sportsman model. It weighs a little more than the Sportsman perhaps by less than half a pound (weighs 1.9 lbs with batteries). It is also close to a couple inches taller. For those not familiar with these it is similar to the size of a 20 oz bottle of Gatorade or soda but just a little wider. Very simple to use and batteries are a cinch to put in. Like the Sportsman, it has a green flashing finder light that blinks every 5 seconds when turned off. This is not a bright or bothersome flash but is meant to help locate in the dark. I also like how this lantern has 3 brightness modes instead of 2 with high, medium and low plus a 4th SOS flashing mode. It is also brighter than most comparable lanterns in high mode at 300 lumens. The three D batteries are expected to last up to 30 days in low mode (29 lumens), 3.5 days in medium (150 lumens) and 32 hours in high. This lantern lights up a room very nicely. Even in medium at 150 lumens it is quite bright. Low mode could often be sufficient during an extended power outage but it's fainter more like a real strong night light. This lantern has a nice handle on top for hanging and can also be used upside down as a downlight. You can spend more or less depending on what you're looking for but this is a choice I would highly recommend. I plan to purchase more for that unexpected emergency. *UPDATE 6/8/13: After experiencing a power outage, I was surprised at the amount of brightness there is in low mode. Depending on your activity, you will probably find this setting adequate much of the time. Of course, this is the mode that advertises lasting 30 days. Very happy with our purchase so I bought an identical orange colored lantern that was priced less than the silver.

I'm very pleased with this purchase. The quality of this lantern is superior to anything that I've owned but it was not my first choice. I had researched several lanterns looking for one that was dependable, had a bright light and was conservative with battery use. I originally had the Rayovac Sportsman LED Lantern (SE3DLN) in mind. However, as I was about to add this to my cart, I noticed the UST 30-Day Lantern in the "customer also viewed" list. The reviews were good, it looked really sturdy and had a brighter light than the Rayovac model so I bought this instead. I was very impressed when I opened the box. The lantern is very well made, rugged feel and look, no cheap plastic. The light was so bright even in the daytime that it blew me away. I like the "find me" blinker that lets you locate it easily in the dark. The batteries were easy to install and the hooks are a bonus that makes it even more useful. I am very picky but this product shines with quality and value. I recommend this wholeheartedly to anyone looking for a rugged, battery conservative, high quality, very bright LED lantern.

Super bright!! This is great for lighting up a huge tent or picnic table area. You get good clear light to read with probably 15-20 feet away. It makes it feel like you are at home in the kitchen. I also have a Black Diamond Titan lantern and this is about the same size as when the Titan is collapsed. I think this lantern will last a long time. PROS: Rugged construction, The top handle is metal covered in rubber. The base has a functional with a loop that lets you hang it upside down, I wish they would have incorporated a hook over a loop. They do supply an S hook with the light to help hang it upside down but there is no way to store it on the light. I could eventually see that getting lost. The globe is plastic and has a nice snug fit when screwing it to the base, not to tight where you cant separate them though. Battery life looks to be great, I have ran the lantern for approximately 10 hours and the batteries are showing 1.4v on average from my multi-meter. CONS: This is merely a preference, I would like a button that you hold to dim the light to the desired output. I think this just comes from owning the Black Diamond lanterns for years though, I'm just used to it. The battery door is simple as long as you line up the arrows, it tightens up in about a half turn. My recommendation to the manufacturer is to have the globe screw into the base and use an attached S hook to hang the lantern. This is just so all the parts stay together and nothing gets lost. Buy it, you will not regret it!!

Good quality lamp

This is the best lantern ever. I haven't tried any other lantern, but I don't need to. I still haven't changed the batteries on this and I've carried it around a lot. My toddler also loves to ruin my night vision with it in dimply lit rooms. He would agree that it doesn't get much better.

Haven't needed it yet but the reviews on battery life were very good . It is compact and well made . it has a handle on top and a hook on the bottom . The switch works well with 3 levels of light as well as an SOS signal . The light is bright and usable on high setting . Very good design and well thought out . Would be great for camping but I bought it for backup for a power outage . I might buy another one .
