You want to find a pump that can match the max flow rate of the filter.

Would this work for an above ground pool? If not,why?

I believe this would work fine for an above ground pool but would be way overkill. I use this on my 32,000 gallon in ground pool. I would get something much smaller for above ground. You would want to check the flow rate from your pump as well.

There is no multiport valve with this cartridge filter. No need to back flush. Valves for draining are installed in the line rather than a typical multiport.
