For the first time in my life I actually LIKE to floss. Amazing. All my life I have struggled with that long string called floss. I even tried one of the adult sized versions of floss picks, but I gave up. My hands have arthritis and I just could not manipulate the string floss nor the larger adult size floss pick I had tried.. I saw these child sized ones and thought I’d try them. I bought two different brands and this was the first bag I opened. They fit perfectly into my hand and I can grip them with my arthritic fingers. I managed to get every tooth flossed with no problem. In fact I liked the process for the first time ever and the floss tasted pleasant, too. These may be made for children but I suggest old folks who are having trouble using string floss try this.

These have been my go-to flossers since my kids have had teeth that touch (which is when you should start flossing them). My husband and I are root canal specialists, so my kids know that flossing twice a day is not negotiable. They can do it themselves in the morning. At night, mom and dad do it. When using these, don’t simply push down between the teeth and then pull up, you should be scraping the floss part up against the side of each tooth that your cleaning a few times until you’ve gotten the gunk off of each one. The floss should slide easily below the gum about a millimeter or two to clean stuff collecting below the gum. Do this gently and move the floss up and down in the vertical direction, not forward and backward in the horizontal direction like you’d use a hacksaw. These flossers are strong, do the trick and my kids like the taste. The only thing I don’t like is the amount of plastic waste we generate using them, but I haven’t found a better alternative. One important thing to note is that while brushing and flossing is critical for good oral health, your kid’s diet is also very important. You can brush and floss twice a day, but if you’re feeding your kid juice, soda or carb loaded snacks multiple times a day, your child will get cavities. At mealtime, give them what you want, but between meals, stick to water and foods that don’t have a lot of simple carbohydrates in them to avoid tooth decay. And if your child does get cavities, do not shame them and tell them it’s because they don’t brush well enough and that going to the dentist to have cavities fixed is going to hurt and they’ll get a big shot. Most tooth decay is related to diet, and most 6 year-olds are not buying their own food. Parents share in the responsibility of good oral health for their kids. It’s not a place for blame or shame for either the child or the parent, just an opportunity to learn and do better.
