Does this tool work for young coconuts also

It is just to get the meat out. If the coconut is old enough that the meat stays together then yes, it will work, if it is so young that the meat is too soft then you might as well use a spoon. If the meat is at least a quarter inch thick then yes it should work well.

I just left an island where they slightly rap the outside of the coconut and the meat is intact. Why is this tool necessary?

I am holding off on buying this tool because it's overpriced. I am hoping to find a used one at Saver's for $3.99, heh. An easy way to remove the meat is to freeze the whole or half coconut in the freezer. Once thawed, the meat won't come off by rapping the outside with a hammer (as I had hoped), but if you use a knife to wedge under the meat, large pieces come off with 1/5th the effort of fresh coconuts. Since it takes me a week to snack off half a coconut, and because they tend to spoil beyond that, I break a fresh coconut in two and freeze the other half.

This tool is for prying out the meat from the shell after you break the coconut into half. You can watch some youtube videos to figure out how to break the coconut first.
