Does it have an american power plug? the product photo shows a european plug. is this just a mistake with the photo?

Mine had an American style plug as well.

Place bread on high rack, select Grill, then use the dial to select time for toasting, start with 3minutes

How well does this work for toasting ... bagels? Is it a possible replacement for a toaster oven?

I've never toasted bagels in our unit. We have a separate toaster. Sorry.

How much clearance is required around the unit, behind, sides and above to use as a convection oven? I'm what the set up instructions say?

I follow the recommendation of at least four inches and have had no problems. I use this feature often
