As a tool that is pocketable its very robust with little to no effort to style or flair. If you appreciated blunt raw focus to function and utility, this is Jeep/Range rover off pavement old build and heavy handed nautical piece. While the shaped black plastic scales and inner brass liners could be deemed attractive, in hand its clear the choice of material is chosen for its marine environments intended use not for attractiveness. While I do not have a Victorinox (Swiss Army) sea fairing marlin spike knife sample to compare, I do have the two large form factor (one being a German Army contracted 70s era), are both far more lighter duty and field use based. If you desire a Marlin spike, this is unapologetically a locking folder that can be relied on aquatically. With a strong bail to attach a lanyard this is indeed intended to be at hand when needed with an eye to the reality it could slip into the drink all to easy. The knife? It's there, its THICK and axe like, not a slicer nor does it have a lock. If I had a modification desire for this combo tool it would be a half or full serrated blade. So as a non Yachtsman/Fisherman my attraction to this tool is as a enthusiast of its no frills Army/Navy surplus uncompromised build. With a modicum of common sense care, the Iron/magnetic 400 series steel is tough and certainly corrosion resistant. Stored with some light oil and not tossed into a damp bucket and left to rot it should be able to maintain reasonable steel finish. My recommendation, if you seek a Euro military surplus build for its knife look into the GAK (German Army Knife). If you are primarily seeking a well made marlin spike this is a very nice option. I was undecided on the star rating, for its cost I leaned towards 5 star, yet its government contract nature precludes the "extra" finish touches the consumer Victorinox level quality exudes.

Blade has a keen single edge and does not lock as it stops at full extension. Marlin spike does lock and unlock very easily. Both are very easy to open. Spike is pointed enough to work well on splices and knots. Very sturdy and well made. Everything appears to be stainless and rustproof. Handy to have on a boat or in a shop.
