So it is vertcal and works.
I'm a creature of habit. So when my antique Panasonic rotary pencil sharpener died, a vertical sharpener was key. But if you expect a single blade to get you a needle sharp point in 3 seconds. Nope. But 30 seconds is tolerable.

It will do.
I like the style. It was not quick to sharpen pencils. It is slow but will get the job done. I think it is safe for kids. I would try an electric for adult purposes.

Um… well…
The media could not be loaded. I bought this battery operated pencil sharpener because my kiddo and I need one for the car while waiting in the long lines for her school to open the doors in the morning. We love coloring to pass the time… this brand I bought previously only with cord so I assumed they would make a great battery operated one as well. I use batteries that start with a “D” (not named so the review goes through) top of line needless to say. The batteries are Brand new and well.. um.. let’s just say the motor sounds like a dying rat… it sharpens fine but the way the motor sounds right out of the box makes me believe it won’t last. Two star rating as it is fairly loud when sharpening and with the motor failing on the very first pencil sharpened … my hopes are not high

Not A Helical Blade!
We've had this pencil sharpener a little over a year. I should have known this type of blade would underperform. It's essentially a little kid's, hand-held school sharpener, but with a motor.I was sad when my trusty, 20+ year old Bostitch, battery powered sharpener died. That worked beautifully every time & I rarely replaced batteries (but in fairness, I didn't use it super frequently). I figured this kind of blade was the new thing (it seemed very popular!) so I'd give it a try. It was certainly a nice price (I paid about $12 after tax). The battery power is fine, we use it a lot now & the motor seems to keep going. But the blade just doesn't compare (in my opinion) to a helical blade like my old Bostitch had. I feel like it did an ok job in the beginning so we kept it. Now about 13 months later the frustration outweighs its performance. Today it ate up almost half of a full pencil & still didn't give it a sharp point.I would not recommend this product for someone who already knows the simple joy of getting a reliably sharp pencil every time and in just a few seconds with a helical blade.

pretty good little sharpener
Works great for getting a sharp point, and motor stops as soon as the pencil has reached maximum sharpness. But the batteries drain pretty quick. Our 7 year old daughter has a lot of those round pencils with full color printing on them, and the sharpener has a little trouble grinding through those, Considering getting a different sharpener that plugs in, but this works for now.

NOT good for coloured pencils!
I should have listened to the reviews lol....I bought it to use with coloured pencils...will it sharpen to a very fine point? Yes-when it works...you have to hold it while sharpening or else the whole unit spins. You have to find just the right amount of pressure when pushing the pencil in to sharpen. Too much pressure and the sharpener bogs down and stops working...to little pressure and it pulses instead of running constantly which, when trying to sharpen soft wax based leads, just breaks the crap out the lead...oh and if your lead breaks off in the end of the sharpener (which happened alot) good luck getting the broken piece out! I realize it is probably a safety thing to not give access to the blade area of the sharpener but anyone who uses coloured pencils knows this is a must!In short-this sharpener does NOT work will on coloured pencils...try a different sharpener
