What exactly is the waist on these briefs it states up to 46"

I am used to ordereing a size larger when buying briefs. This time I could have ordered my usual "large" rather then the "extra large": the latter were a bit loose around the hips. Still overall they are a good value; bikini brief, low on the hips, good smooth texture; I chose the pink color--all of which I like.

I sleep in mine...why not?
