Fascinating, compelling and quite stunning
This work by Michael Stedman is a must-read for anyone with an interest in the Great War.The author has researched his subject matter in depth and presents the chronological story of the Pals beautifully. One unusual aspect of the work is that the author seldom presents his own opinions. Instead, he lets the narrative speak for itself which is much more effective. This is a splendid military and social history read on Kindle and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Vast amount of information
Great book if you're looking for where nearly all battalions were. It has definitely pointed me in the direction I need to go.

Just about everything you need!
The book which is absolutely essential if you're interested in the southern end of the Somme battles and/or Manchester's Pals involvement. Many of the pictures and especially the contemporary maps are hard to find elsewhere. I have my copy at hand all the time when I am researching or writing my first World War novel - I couldn't bear to be without it.I am especially looking forward to meeting Michael Stedman at a talk at the 'Museum of the Manchesters' soon.Bob
