how thick of a door panel is required?

My door was 1,3/8" thick. Fit great. But the two halves are screwed together so I believe the door could be thicker and it will still work fine. How thick I'm not sure. It would depend on the threads on the screws provided.

Can this be used on drywall instead of a door?

Not without modifying it unless the two sides of the drywall were the same thickness as a door. You'd be better with a couple HVAC duct grills.

Does the product include a template for cutting?

No but you can use the grill itself as a template. The trimmed is bigger then the inner grill, so you’re able to put the grill Right Face-up like it shows on the picture here and traces the inner part of the grill with a pencil or marker. It’s better than a template. I purchased two (2) of these put at the upper top of the door and the other at the bottom of the door. Looks great.
