how do i go between or even know when i am in the different stages? it says go "up" and "down" but i don't see how to do this.

Yes I went through it. Look to the device side way. Press one button and you will see it stay a bit down compared to others.

Do the settings stay the same between power cycles? Once I hang this in the attic, I will only have convenient access to the extension cord.
